Era - 1980s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Living in the monumental shadow of his father's accomplishments, Marvis Frazier is most famous himself for two infamous losses despite a number of wins over notable contenders in both the amateurs and professional ranks.

Marvis was born in 1960 in Beaufort County, South Carolina, the son of the great Smokin' Joe Frazier. He was a standout athlete in high school, wrestling and playing basketball and getting scholarship offers in football. However, boxing would take priority over the others as he graduated, forging a standout amateur career under the tutilage of the highly-regarded George Benton, winning national championships in the Golden Gloves and AAU competition, defeating an impressive list of foes along the way including Tim Witherspoon, James Bonecrusher Smith, Mitch "Blood" Green and Tony Tubbs.

Marvis would turn pro in 1980, and his father would take over his training and management. As an amateur, Marvis excelled at range, outboxing his opponents more often than not. Sensing that he would not maximize his earning potential as a pro if he continued in that style, Joe Frazier sought to train Marvis to shift towards aggression in the ring. Somewhat undersized and lacking heavy hands, Marvis still started off with a win streak, beating a veteran Joe Bugner to set up a shot at Larry Holmes and the Heavyweight championship of the world in 1983. This would result in an abrupt, one round TKO loss at the hands of the Easton Assassin, with Marvis looking woefully outmatched in defeat.

Marvis would fight his way back into relevancy after the Holmes loss, defeating fellow contender James "Quick" Tillis and his old foe from the amateur ranks, Bonecrusher Smith. Now, however, he would find himself in the sights of a fast rising force of nature that went by the name of Mike Tyson. In 1986, Marvis would once again find himself on the receiving end of a first round stoppage, with Iron Mike knocking him out within seconds of the opening bell.
