Mac Foster, known by the composite nickname of "Big Mac the Knife," was a contender in the late 60s and early 70s, with a solid jab, heavy handed hooks and a strong chin making him a legit opponent in the division. His knockout ratio was excellent, with every single one of his wins coming by way of knockout.

MacArthur Foster was born in Fresno, California in 1942, growing up in a large sharecropper family, and worked on the farm in his youth. Upon graduating from high school, Foster joined the United States Marine Corps, serving two terms of duty in Vietnam, and also became a standout boxer in the military. Upon his return to the States, Foster became a full time boxer in the professional ranks, putting a twenty four fight win streak together.

In a 1968 sparring bout, Sonny Liston, on the back part of his career, employed Foster as a sparring partner, a chance Foster took to knock down the former champ. Several wins over the intimidating Cleveland Williams and the imposing Jack O'Halloran set Foster up with a fight against Jerry Quarry in 1970. Foster controlled the early rounds, but Quarry's toughness and skill kept him in long enough to score a sixth round knockout.

Foster wasted little time getting his momentum back, beating Zora Folley within four months and a few more wins earned him a shot at Muhammad Ali in Tokyo for a 1972 bout. Foster held a low opinion of Ali due to his incendiary statements insulting black servicemen in the military, while Ali predicted he would defeat Foster in five rounds. The fight itself was underwhelming, with Ali controlling things with his jab and clinch and the fight went the full fifteen rounds for an Ali decision victory.
