this is metal reacting with metal which in this case makes aluminium burn, also ever heated a piece of metal so much it oxidized? oxedization is the same as burning pretty much.
though i would understand if the steel took small amounts of damage over time due to rusting then you'd have to occasionally repair it
In game, those raider can burn steel with just a lighter. Can you melt steel and create those spark with a lighter and only lighter IRL? Game or not mean to be 100% in real life, if you don't like it then don't use or play it.
Granted, you're not getting up to such temperatures with a lighter, nor a torch. Maybe an oxyacytelene torch or thermite, but neither of those are in the game.
