Opis
Era - Late 1970s / Early 1990s - Boxing - Heavyweight

Michael "Dynamite"* Dokes had some of the fastest hands in the history of the Heavyweight division and remained a threat to the upper echelon for over a decade, despite often being his own worst enemy.

Born in Akron, Ohio in 1958, Dokes won a silver medal in the Pan American Games of 1975, losing out to the great Cuban, Teofilo Stevenson and became a professional the next year and also raised his profile with an exhibition bout with Muhammad Ali. Dokes quickly earned a name for himself with wins over the defensive master Jimmy Young and a draw followed by a quick knockout of Ossie Ocasio. A controversial series followed against Mike Weaver, with a startlingly quick, contested stoppage to take his title in 1982, and a draw afterwards.

Around this time, Dokes, for all his skills in the ring, found that cocaine was a more destructive opponent outside of it. And as such, a loss would follow to South Africa's Gerrie Coetzee in 1983, losing his title. A win over the iron chinned Randall "Tex" Cobb was followed by a knee injury caused by a car accident and a drug arrest in 1986. This, however, was the beginning of a turnaround, with Dokes enrolling in an extensive rehab program and working himself back into shape, losing to Evander Holyfield, Razor Ruddock and Riddick Bowe, showing some signs at times of a career that, notable as it was, could and should have amounted to more.

* (It's amusing how many heavies of the 80s had "explosive" nicknames, with Tony Tucker and Tony Tubbs both called TNT and Dokes using Dynamite.)
