Description
Era - Late 1960s / Early 1980s

A benchmark for excellence across the 1970s, and a contender for the greatest Super Lightweight of all time, Kid Pambele, Antonio Cervantes brought skill, power and consistency at the highest level into the ring for over a decade.

Born in San Basilio de Palenque, Colombia in 1945, Cervantes rose up from poverty to box professionally, starting in 1964. By the dawn of the 70s, Cervantes had traveled to Venezuela and California, gaining experience against increasingly stronger opposition, including the Untouchable Nicolino Locche, who thwarted an attempt on his Super Lightweight belt in 1971. However, Cervantes was only beginning to enter into his prime, and defeated Alfonso Frazer in the following year to become the champ.

Defeating the notoriously difficult target, Locche by knockout in a rematch was among nine defenses of the title by Cervantes. In 1976, his reign was cut short by a 17 year old Wilfred Benitez, who shocked Cervantes and the boxing world with a decision victory. Benitez had moved up in weight by 1977, though, and Cervantes was able to defeat Carlos Maria Gimenez to again become Super Lightweight champion. A fight with Panama's Roberto Duran was discussed, but fell through, but Cervantes did face the Hawk, Aaron Pryor in 1980, and despite a spirited fight, lost his title by a fourth round knockout.
