Antonio Margarito was a warrior with endless stamina and an iron chin who took on every top competitor he could manage. He was also a fighter known for punching with illegally hardended wrist wraps.

Born in Torrance, California in 1978, Margarito's family moved to Tijuana, Mexico in his early youth and by the age of fifteen, he turned professional. Despite his young age,
Margarito won more than he lost in the Tijuana boxing scene, moving up to fighting on a larger stage by 1996. By 2001, he unsuccessfuly fought for the Welterweight title against Daniel Santos, an effort only thwarted by a headbutt and a cut that stopped the fight early.

A year later, Margarito defeated Antonio Diaz for the Welterweight title, defending his title against a number of foes, including Kermit Cintron and Joshua Clottey before losing it to the lanky Paul Williams in 2007. In 2008, Margarito destroyed the previously undefeated, Miguel Cotto.

This fight would be remembered a year later, when prior to a 2009 bout against Shane Mosley, Naz Richardson, Mosley's trainer noticed an issue with Margarito's wrist wraps. It was discovered that a substance resembling Plaster of Paris was contained in the wraps, and with proper wraps on, Margarito fell to Mosley by knockout. Further investigations suggested that the illegal wraps were used in the Cotto fight, placing much of the blame on trainer Javier Capetillo, and suspending Margarito for a year.

Losses would follow to both Manny Pacquiao and in a rematch against Cotto while Margarito looked to rebound from the incident.
