This is mostly just a factor in PvP. NPC ships usually have all their weapons without a set focus, and so decoys work pretty well there.
I converted the bow to heavy armor and put 2 decoys along the keel, surrounded by heavy armor islands. I'd love to put welders behind it, but the internal space doesn't really allow it without major restructuring. They are mostly for when I get flanked.
My latest iteration includes 3x M-8 Destroyer guided missile launchers at the stem, replacing the rocket launchers, but I'm not sure they fit in with a fast hit-and-run vessel. They are more of a long range weapon. I think I might replace them with shorter range high-power fixed railguns, given the armored bow.
I should be able to fly straight at an enemy, let the heavy bow take the hits, and then blow them to pieces with the railguns, letting the PDC take care of whatever is left.
I was able to take down a heavily armed NPC ship 3x the size of this one, but I had to throw the Mako in the grinder afterwards. I might do a few more iterations on the design.
I would also be interested in seeing what kind of retrofitting you are doing? Just out of curiosity.
I tried to make it as small and simple as possible, big ships just take forever to design
Anyway, I hope it serves you well!
