Era - 1980s - Boxing - Heavyweight

One of the many super skilled boxers of the 80's Heavyweight scene, Pinklon Thomas had a phenomenal jab but often had trouble remaining consistent in his performances.

Born in Pontiac, Michigan in 1958, Thomas was naturally athletic, but also gravitated towards trouble, despite a stable upbrining. Hooked on heroin by the age of twelve, Thomas resorted to crime to support his habit, and eventually ended up with an invitation to a gym due to a false boast that he was a professional boxer. As it turned out, he managed to stick it out, winning the Pacific Northwest Golden Gloves and actually did turn professional in 1978.

Thomas ran up a long undefeated streak going into 1984, before taking on Tim Witherspoon for his share of the Heavyweight title, a fight which Thomas won by a majority decision. A TKO over the formidible Mike Weaver kept the belt around his waist in 1985, but a year later, Trevor Berbick was able to defeat Pinklon for the title.

Having lost to Berbick, Thomas rebounded with three wins, before challenging Mike Tyson for the title in 1987. This fight saw the champ become the first person to ever knock down, and knock out the durable Thomas. Losses to Evander Holyfield, Riddick Bowe and Tommy Morrison followed, but one can hardly fault Thomas for challenging the best he could manage, in those bouts.

Incidentally, in later years, Thomas started a foundation, Project P.I.N.K. (Pride In Neighborhood Kids) which serves to assist children in their education, athletics and in learning self-respect, looking to take the experiences of his youth as an example to help others avoid the issues he dealt with.
