Peter Maher was a destructive puncher who could well have been described as a glass cannon; able to deliver as much damage as anyone he faced, but unable to take return fire nearly as well.

Irish to the core, Maher was born in Gunnode Tuam, Galway, Ireland in 1869 and fought in his homeland early on, winning the Middleweight title of Ireland in 1888, winning the Heavyweight title of Ireland a few years later. While losing fights to greats including Peter Jackson and Bob Fitzsimmons, he managed victories over many of the top contenders of the time, including Frank Slavin, Gus Ruhlin and Joe Choynski.
