James Bonecrusher Smith

Combining natural toughness with hard hitting combinations, James "Bonecrusher" Smith was one of the many dangerous but inconsistent Heavyweights of the 1980s who defined the era.

James Smith was born in Magnolia, North Carolina in 1953. Starting professionally in 1981 at the relatively older age of 28, Bonecrusher lost his first fight but rebounded in the following bouts, beating solid foes such as Frank Bruno and Mike Weaver. He also would lose to Larry Holmes, Tony Tubbs and Marvis Frazier in the same period, but a win over Tim Witherspoon would gain an alphabet title for Smith.

Perhaps the most famous bout of Smith's career was in 1987, against fellow Heavyweight champion, Mike Tyson. Tyson ran through his foe with the typical ease that he exhibited in his prime, however.
