Era - 1960s / 1970s - Boxing - Heavyweight

A wild swinging Argentinian with a big punch and even bigger personality, Oscar Bonavena was a legit threat in one of the most stacked eras in Heavyweight history. Known as "Ringo" for his Beatles-like hair cut andthe Argentinian Strong Man for his power hitting, Bonavena may not have been champion, but was an essential element to the tapestry of the times.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1942, Bonavena wasted no time in his professional career, taking on Zora Folley one year into his debut, losing to the solid veteran. However, a year later, he found himself then defeating and debatedly knocking down the iron chinned Canadian, George Chuvalo, a victory that put a spotlight on Bonavena.

Bonavena's star continued to rise, with a high profile defeat to Joe Frazier balanced out by victories over Karl Mildenberger, Jimmy Ellis and his old foe Folley. Another defeat was seen in a title bout rematch against Frazier, but Bonavena was far from finished. Having called out Muhammad Ali in the media, Bonavena was knocked down and stopped for the first time in his career. And while he gave an older Floyd Patterson a tough fight in 1972, Bonavena again left the ring in defeat.
