Description
The Canadian civ in Civ VI is tough and sort of unfun to play, mostly because it doesn't have bonuses that aren't counteracted by anti-bonuses. This mod is our attempt to fix the raw deal Canada got in Gathering Storm.

We began by moving all the diplomacy-related bonuses and drawbacks (Four Faces of Peace) to Laurier and giving the nation of Canada all the bonuses that Laurier had (The Last Best West). We then buffed the bonuses Canada gets. So, while the nation still has a tundra bias, it now gets food and production from tundra tiles and can farm them. Similar to how Russia gets +1 faith and +1 production from tundra tiles, Canada gets +1 food and +1 production from them.

We continued by making the Mountie a character that better represents the Mountie's original task of policing Canada's broad territory. He can still make a national park, but he also receives a +5 combat bonus on all tundra and snow tiles (instead of on national park tiles). To better represent when Canada introduced the force that eventually became the Mounties (and its original purpose), he can be made after researching the Rifling tech in the Industrial era instead of the Conservation civic in the Modern era. He replaces the Cavalry unit and has its production cost and combat strength but has no strategic resource cost. We retained his low maintenance cost.

Canada also gets a 70% discount when purchasing snow and tundra tiles (up from 50%). We made no changes to the hockey rink feature or the strategic resource bonus. Any good bonus the Last Best West had is still there, in original form or buffed a bit.

We made no changes to the original diplomacy bonuses and drawbacks except make them Laurier's instead of Canada's.

Our goal was to make Canada a viable civ that can pursue a variety of victories and open the door to the addition of other Canadian leaders that do not require an automatic "farm on tundra" ability (it makes no sense to give Canada the tundra bias while giving the leader the bonus necessary to live there). We've play-tested this mod extensively. While Canada is still not a top tier civ, it is significantly improved, especially in worlds with a decent amount of cold territory. It's fun to play now.

We welcome suggestions about what could be done for Canada or Laurier to make either fit the game better (not be overpowered or overpowered by other nations) and be more in tune with the history of Canada.

Lmao Canada is not OP and the bonuses it has are suiting to it's heritage. Idk what you were on about Arcadian.

@Alyfox No. It will add these bonuses on top of the already OP Canada. When I tried I had farms with 7 food and mines with 7 production on tundra, and that's without tech bonuses. So it's obviously cheating to use it. I just wish there was a mod that nerfs Canada's improvements on tundra and snow.

I just played a game on Emperor as Canada with this mod and it was indeed a lot of fun. It made me wonder if Canada's a tad overpowered now, as I pretty much romped to an easy victory. It could be due to a lucky starting position, that I'm just awesome, or whatever, but it was the easiest time I've had in an Emperor game so far. I won on culture, but also had 18 diplomacy points at the end, a powerful military messing around in allies' wars, and was on my way to a science victory as well.

I agree with VedddeeR, we need a workaround or just scrap the whole Formal War Only policy that Canada has. The achievement to get Canada involved in an Emergency is tough enough.

I wish we can get a mod for Canada that will let me attack someone without reasoning, sometimes people just need to be clapped.

I found an interaction between this mod and Real Building Upgrades. This is what I posted over there:

I've found an interaction that's very buggy: with Better Canada and Real Building Upgrades (and no other mods) Canada's tiles get way too high of yields in Tundra. I'm not sure why Real Building Upgrades affects yields on Turn 1, but for some reason it does.

Hi General Profit, we gave Canada production from tundra tiles to make the nation a bit more well-rounded. They already receive culture from the ice hockey rink, and production can be used to further any victory type. This way, the player can choose how to play Canada instead of being strongly influenced to take the culture victory route.

Hi drw543, do you have Gathering Storm installed and enabled? This mod requires GS because it modifies the nation of Canada that was added in that expansion.

Interesting mod although might I suggest taking out the +1 production and replacing it with +1 culture? as with both of them it makes tundra tiles outright better than grassland/plains, would synergise better with four paces of peace and distinguish it better from the russian ability
