Description
The VARGR Strike Fighter by Valkyrja - Maintenance & Engineering is a small grid space-fightercraft, armed with gatling guns and reloadable rocket launchers. It is run by Ion Thrusters with an additional set of Hydrogen-Booster and an Afterburner.

This item is survival-ready! It is fully conveyor-linked, thruster-damage compatible and uses no mods and no subgrids!

Grid mass: 58,187 kg

Description
The VARGR was designed to serve as a multi-role fightercraft, capable to be stored and deployed from a moon-base. In order to deliver decent performance under influence of gravity, the fighter was outfitted with a wide array of Ion-Thrusters, making it both heavy and large in dimensions. But it also allowed the ship to fit a wide array of mission-equipment and redundant systems, including a set of medium cargo containers that are connected directly to a pair of reloadable rocket-launchers.

Providing tremendous cargo-space for ammunition and additional gear, the VARGR is one of the most enduring fightercrafts available on the market, making it especially suitable for assault-runs against large targets.
With their capability to reload ammo, the VARGRs Rocket Launchers allow to deliver way more projectiles towards the target than standard-models. For more precise attacks and to fend of enemy interceptor crafts, the VARGR also carries a total of 8x 25mm Gatling Guns.

A set of large batteries is embedded into the hull, in order to provide power for the Ion-Thrusters and internal systems. While being capable to run on batteries only, the ship also carries a few small reactors to further increase its uptime if required.
Two connectors facing dorsal and ventral ensure compatibility with most hangars or carriers, while always providing a direct access-point to the storage-compartment, even when the ship is docked.

As the VARGR was significantly lacking in acceleration, the fighter was outfitted with a large Hydrogen-Afterbruner, fueled directly by two O2/H2-Generators. This however required the vessel to carry a decent amount of ice with it all the time, adding even more mass to the already quite heavy ship.
Already ousted by newer and more advanced designs like the Gorgon Heavy Fighter platform, the VARGR was about to vanish from the stars.
The introduction of small hydrogen tanks eventually offered new ways to provide fuel to the ship and not only made the afterburner more potent, but allowed to replace multiple Ion- with additional Hydrogen-Thrusteres, boosting the ships overall mobility.
Better protected batteries, relocated Gatling Guns for better grouping and a facelift once more turned the VARGR into a valid product within the V.M.E lineup.

@Skorpychan: Try spinning - that's a good trick!
This fighter is old and comparably slow, combined with a forward-centred cockpit. Just face-tanking a station in this thing and expecting it to make it through is fairly enthusiastic and I honestly don't know what you expect me to say about this comment.

However, despite its age, the Vargr can still deal with SE's vanilla npc encounters quite easily. Especially when they're static grids.
Maintain a healthy distance and keep your weapons on target, while using upthrust and roll for evasion. Have your dampeners off and upthrust at full throttle, while engaging your target in a slow-roll. That's how you dodge the generic targeting AI in this game. Practice that and you will go through most encounters unscratched. If you struggle with that, I recommend moving to a more agile fighter with a modern weapons loadout. You can disarm most stations with a single assault turret.

@Skorpychan: That would make some sense, as I'm pretty sure this design predates NPCs existing in the game (besides the "cargo ships" that would float by in a straight line) and thus wasn't designed against them.

I tried it, the space pirate base shredded it in seconds without taking any damage in return.

THE LIGHT ARMOUR IS USELESS. It may as well not be there!

This is an awesome weapons platform. I crafted it in survival and after flying for a while. I started tinkering with it and adding weapons and changes to it. Thank you for the awesome ship

@MRC:
The name refers to a wolf from Norse Mythology. It is also commonly known as "warg" and has found its way into many fantasy-franchises, like the Tolkien-Universe.

This will be handy defending myself against the Vilani in the Lair System. :) If I understand the naming reference correctly.

Very nice looking ship built on the concept I was looking for. Now I just need to figure out how to build small grid ships out of a projector without losing my mind to armor blocks hiding themselves everywhere and behind each other. Building a piston-welderwall shipyard feels like overkill when I just want this one ship, but that seems like the only sane solution.

Dankenobi1: Already on it.
