Introduction
This guide will demonstrate how you can get first place in all of the Proving Ground challenges.

In my demonstration videos I'm playing on Game Plus mode and I'm level 10. These challenges will become easier the more you have the specific weapon upgraded, so keep that in mind before attempting.
Breaker Barracks
This is the easiest of all of the Proving Ground Challenges. In order to achieve this you might need to upgrade the Breaker's Bow a few times to shoot through multiple balloons at once.

First place requires 5 shots or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Power String
  • Scumbag Arrows
  • Reinforced Bow Limbs
  • Cael Fletching
  • Dual Pulley System

Trapper Shingle
The Trapper Shingle challenge might require you to upgrade the Fanged Repeater a few times to complete. In the video I used the extra ammo upgrades as well as Tracking Critters, which allows you to move faster through the course. It's also a good idea to reload your weapon as you move between each set of targets.

First place requires you to destroy 64 targets.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Double Clip
  • Flurry Bolts
  • Hollowed Chamber
  • Reinforced Piston
  • Tracking Critters

Windbag Ranch
The moment you pickup the weapon run to the center of the level and start attacking the squirts as they spawn. The yellow shaded squirts spawned at the the start will flee from you so you want to kill as many as possible before they scatter too much. Once they have stopped spawning destroy the carts and then the turrets and quickly dispose of any remaining squirts that might have escaped.

First place requires you to kill every enemy in 60 seconds or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Keen Edge
  • Combat Handle
  • Alloy Tip
  • Reinforced Spine
  • Ura Bolster

Bullhead Court
This is one of the most tedious of all of the challenges. In this challenge you need to counter-attack with your shield to kill every enemy. When the large windbag appears at the end lure him off the edge by running to the edge and jumping out of the way at the last second, if you fall off like I did in the video it counts as a hit.

Activating Lunkhead Liqueur is a good idea for this challenge as it provides a passive 100% counter attack damage bonus.

First place requires you to be hit less than 2 times.

The Scrap Yard
Even with a fully upgraded hammer this challenge will come down to the last few seconds. Try and hit several targets in one swing and never stop moving.

First place requires you to destroy 100 objects in 27 seconds or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Sledge Head
  • Reverse Grip
  • Craftsman Shaft
  • Checkered Face
  • Cael Engraving

Zulwood Grove
With an upgraded Scrap Musket this challenge is quite easy. Use the Scrap Musket's generous cone of fire to shoot the balloons off in groups.

First place requires you to use 15 shots or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Rifled Barrel
  • Heavy Shells
  • Tactical Stock
  • Reinforced Chamber
  • Cael Flintlock

Slinger Range
Upgrade the Dueling Pistols so you have Sealed Cylinders, this will prevent any of your shots from scattering. When in the course use your auto-aim button as soon as a target appears and fire as quickly as possible.

First place requires you to score 700 or more.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Sealed Cylinders
  • High-Caliber Chambers
  • Cauldron Powder
  • Hunting Barrels
  • Armor-Eater Rounds

Camp Dauncy
This challenge is one of the more difficult ones. Timing is everything, only kill enemies that are blocking your path and move as quickly as possible by utilizing the throw function on the Brusher's Pike. This challenge is very difficult if your Brusher's Pike is not fully upgraded.

First place requires you to activate every button in 60 seconds or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Hollowed Shaft
  • Hunting Grip
  • Brusher Bindings
  • Heavy Counterweight
  • Splitter Spearhead

Trigger Hill
This challenge is quite generous with the amount of time it gives you. Upgrade your Army Carbine to give it a faster aiming time and this challenge will be a breeze.

First place requires you to destroy every enemy in 35 seconds or less.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Speed Tuning
  • Marksman Barrel
  • Reinforced Chamber
  • Reflex Scope
  • Boomer Rounds

Grady Incenerator
This challenge can be tricky. Putting an upgrade point in Napalm Reservoir will give your Flame Bellows a damage over time effect, this will help you finish off peckers which escape with low health.

First place requires you to destroy 72 peckers before the timer runs out.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Volatile Fuel
  • Napalm Reservoir
  • Cooling Intake
  • Contoured Grip
  • Streamlined Furnace

Boundless Bay
Aim your Galleon Mortar to destroy the squirts in large groups. There is a pack of squirts that will roam from one side to the other, time your shots so it hits them at the same time as another group.

First place requires you to score 80 or more.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Burstone Bombs
  • Target System
  • Sharpnel Charges
  • Reactive Tubing
  • Stonewall Propellant

Mancer Observatory
In order to get first place in this challenge you cannot let any Gasfellas destroy the conductor structures. To make this challenge easy upgrade your Calamity Cannon with Blast Generator and Incendiary Fuel Cell to give it extra splash damage.

First place requires all 7 conductors to be left intact.

Upgrades Equipped:
  • Supercharged Emitter
  • Blast Generator
  • Speed Configuration
  • Incendiary Fuel Cell
  • Tracking Processor

I did Slinger Range 10 years ago with mouse no problem, but now I'm using controller because of RSI, and I simply can't shoot fast enough. I had to use the turbo function on my controller... :squirtooh:

Bullhead Court, got first prize with 3 hits. So it should be "3 hits or less" not "be hit less than 2 times" which means I can only get hit 1 time because "less than 2" is 1. After many restarts getting hit more than once, I then watched your video and you got 2 times. So this guide ironically made the challenge harder than it should have.:ss13ok:

I did the Trapper Shingle challange with 0 or 1 upgrades. It's so infuriating seeing how easy it is with more upgrades. I didn't know they count. Needless to say not i'm certain I can finish all of them. Some of them are straight impossible with no upgrades.

Yet another tip for the Slinger range. You can bind fire to mouse wheel if you're too slow to click the button.

Just leaving a note for anyone having trouble with Slinger Range, since normally you either have to be EXTREMELY fast or have all upgrades (neither of which are feasible if you don't want to revisit after beating the game).

Equip the Werewhiskey at the Distillery, then in the Proving Ground, throw yourself off the edge until your health turns red, activating the Werewhiskey's damage buff. You will still need to have some damage upgrades for the weapon from the Forge, as otherwise it might not be enough.

I started this game over from scratch after 6 years of not touching it. I didn't beat it that time. With that being said, you don't need full upgrades to complete these challenges. I did all of them at weapon stock or a couple upgrades added. Minus the cannon. I effing hate that thing. It's targeting is terrible and the loading is maddening. I get that it's supposed to be this giant eff off cannon, but seriously... it's awful to use. I have yet to complete the challenge and (just to save my sanity) feel I'll have to skip it. However, all the other ones are quite possible to beat after some practice.

@GreyAria: I have the same problems. I can't aim that Cannon to save my life. I haven't even been able to complete the challenge and get third place.
