[TLP] Legacy Weapon Skins

Description
This was inspired by and based on [WOTC] Conventional Weapons. If you like this mod, please give the original author an upvote and check out their mod.

Changes the vanilla weapons to look like their legacy counterparts. So a Cannon will look like a Light Machine Gun, a Gauss Rifle like an Anti-Materiel Rifle, a Storm Gun like an Energy Sweeper, etc.

There's an extensive config file so you can set the skins up however you like. For example, you can make all the weapons look like Conventional Legacy weapons regardless of tier, or a mix of vanilla and TLP content. It also includes settings for non-TLP content such as GREMLINs, Psi Amps and WotC faction weapons.

This is just a cosmetic mod. No stats were changed. No content was added. The config does include a section for upgrade slot counts but this is just for compatibility and has the standard values by default.

Thanks to Mr Nice for taking the time to explain some basic modding things and answer some questions.

History:
  • 16 Dec 2018 - Changed "0" setting to be more compatible with other mods. (Do nothing rather than set X2 vanilla skins.)
  • 15 Dec 2018 - Switched to OnPostTemplatesCreated event structure.

Known Issues:
  • Legacy weapons do not have attachment models or UI textures. You can change the attachment skins to use another weapons' attachments for ease of use but it will look odd.

Compatibility/Overrides:
None! Just the X2DownloadableContentInfo class.

Usage:
To change which skins are used, you just have to modify the config file:
\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\268500\1588279116\Config\XComVanillaSkins.ini
  • 1 - Conventional
  • 2 - Magnetic
  • 3 - Beam
  • 4 - Legacy Conventional
  • 5 - Legacy Laser
  • 6 - Legacy Plasma
  • 0 - Default

Obviously for weapons which don't have Legacy variants, like WotC faction weapons or GREMLINs, using values above 3 will just behave like 0 or the default setting.

Example 1:
Set all assault rifles to look like the Legacy "Old-world Assault Rifle".

ASSAULTRIFLE_CV_SKIN=4 ASSAULTRIFLE_MG_SKIN=4 ASSAULTRIFLE_BM_SKIN=4

Example 2:
Set the shotgun to use the vanilla attachments so you can see the green UI icons.

SHOTGUN_CV_ATTSKIN=0 SHOTGUN_MG_ATTSKIN=0 SHOTGUN_BM_ATTSKIN=0

Example 3:
Set all weapons back to vanilla apperances (effectively disable the mod).

ASSAULTRIFLE_CV_SKIN=0 ASSAULTRIFLE_MG_SKIN=0 ASSAULTRIFLE_BM_SKIN=0 PISTOL_CV_SKIN=0 PISTOL_MG_SKIN=0 PISTOL_BM_SKIN=0 Etc.

Weapons affected:
  • Assault Rifle
  • Shotgun
  • Cannon
  • Sniper Rifle
  • Pistol
  • Sword
  • Gremlin
  • Psi Amp
  • Vektor Rifle
  • Bullpup
  • Ripjack
  • Shard Gauntlets
  • Autopistol

@MattyJohnJovi Because the XCOMMOD file for this mod is aimed at the fan-made alternative launcher. It works fine in 2K launcher, but you have to fix it.

Go to this mod's config folder (in steam workshop folders), open the XCOMMOD file with Notepad or something.
Delete the "contentImage=" line
Delete all of the Description section except the first sentence (so that "RequiresXPACK=true" and tags remains after), and delete the URL in that first sentence

Should then show up as "TLP Legacy Weapon Skins". If a mod genuinely works in WOTC, you can fix a lot of mods in the 2K launcher by making sure they're like the format of the 6 lines you'd have left.

Why doesn't this mod show up in the 2K launcher?

How to remove mod at middle game without "missing mod" warning when load save game?

I like this, I prefer the TLP weapons' looks more than the base game's, and this allows me to put them to better use. I do have a one weird bug with the Plasma Cannon (Original not prototype), the barrel is gone and the rest of it appears as the original. Not a big issue I just followed your directions to set it to default and accepted the loss

Thanks for the mod, I really like it. Sadly I also get the LWOTC bug with the cannon showing the original model but with parts of it missing. I couldn't work out what the issue was, has anyone found out?

@All you need is LOVE! I'm not sure. I haven't actually looked at LWOTC, so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work unless they had a completely separate cannon weapon template.

@Sinriel I don't think the Legacy armors work the same way as the vanilla ones. The Legacy armors are single "suits" as far as I'm aware and the base game ones are made up of several modular parts. Even if you did use one of the mods that chops them up, there are probably more vanilla pieces than Legacy. You'd have to look at how those mods work and rejig it to also remove (or otherwise replace) the vanilla ones in the game.

Is there a way to fix the cannon weapon from LWOTC to work with the LMG skins? I'm assuming it doesn't work because the "cannon" is technically a different model than the one in vanilla.
Sinriel Jun 18, 2021 @ 11:30am
Would you be willing to make a mod that does this for the different armor tiers? I much prefer the TLP armors to the regular ones. Or if you can maybe give instructions on how to do it myself.

Thanks

@thebeezneez1981 If you don't have any other conflicting mods then the only other thing I can think of is whether you've changed the config file.

@Nexolate I don't think it's a conflict as I have no other weapon mods. I subscribed to the one that changes the upgrade tiers to the tlp variants since this post and it changed all of the weapons. However, I just got into mag weapons and it didn't change those to their laser variants so, who knows. I'm genuinely confused. I also keep having some of my cosmetic mod parts get "frozen" onto the character even though I don't actually have it equipped, but that's probably not related and definitely isn't related to this mod... I don't think. Thanks for the reply.
