USS Monitor

History

The USS Monitor [monitor.noaa.gov] was an Ironclad warship of the Union Navy during the American civil war as a response to the CSS Virginia, the first ironclad. Designed by Swedish engineer John Ericsson, the monitor was the first warship in the world to feature a rotating gun turret and changed the face of naval combat forever.

The monitor was lost at sea in December 1862, as it was not suited to rough seas. It sparked a line of river monitors across the world, such as the SMS Leitha .

This is the version without smoke stacks, if you would prefer it with them, it can be found here.

Overview

This 1:1 scale ship was designed for use in creative mode battles. The interiors of the above deck structures and wooden framing below the deck armour are accurately detailed to make destruction that bit more glorious.

Control

The ship is controlled from a passenger seat in the pilot house. To control the ship’s movement, use the ship remote control. To control the turret, use the turret remote control.

ARMAMENT
  • 2x XI-inch Dahlgren shell guns.

Enjoy!

I live in an area where they have an entire Mariners Museum and an entire wing is devoted to the Battle of Hampton Roads, they have a replica of the turet, a scale model of the ship you can walk on, and they have glass windows peering into the room where they are preserving the real turret. Awesome build man!

Np mate, I actually have a degree in history from my time
in the army. I often help out modders who want to be historically correct,
or just help to find a workaround. Feel free to PM me if you ever need
help.

No ironclad of that period ever sunk another "armoured" ship.
It was extremely rare for them to meet and the combat was generally
inconclusive. It is theorised incertain circles that, had the engagement
continued for a couple more hours Monitor would have won.. This is
just a theory though...
From what i can see it looks quite cool and as "authentic" as any
model of its kind i have seen in a game.
While it was not the first ship to carry iron armour, it was the first to employ
turreted guns in combat.
