Description

The Bomber variant of the Ranger turns the ship itself into a high supply bomber. The forward cannons are still present for ship fighting such as clearing the intended drop zone. The high flight cieling means several can stack vertically over the same drop zone for multiplier the bombing rate.

A lone Ranger Bomber is likely to overcome just one flak gun. However in pairs or in a fleet action where the flak guns have other targets the Ranger Bombers are much more effective.

In ship actions the triple bomb bays are quite vicious espicially as most airships have no or limited blast protection.

Reduction of the ship's AA suite was necessary to provide manpower to the bomb bays.

Weapons:
3 x Bomb bays down
3 x Cruiser Mk 2 forward
1 x Rifle for
1 x Rifle aft

40/39 Crew
no Marines
3 Guards

Original Ranger with crow's nest for when you have no airplane technology, write up and links to variants:

I've run more combat tests with them on AI control. These things are surprisingly vicious. The triple bomb bay is like a heavy cannon or other "super" weapon if it gets above, which it often can. If it cant it still has the bow guns do throw in.

Update on combat performance: In fleet actions its actually pretty nasty to enemy ships. It flies pretty high and drops three (3) bombs at a time. While building based flak is hard to knock out most lightly armored airships suffer bad wounds from the bombs. Turns out it is a great addition to a squadron. A group of fast movers, like the other Ranger types, can work with it to good affect.

With the Ranger series of Frigates having a common hull its is possible to configure them mid campaign through refits to what you need at the time.

Good ship

Yeah... it can only really knock out one flak gun. Best to send it in once the flak is already dealt with by horizontal fire or as part of a fleet action.

Combat testing suggests 2 upward flak guns might be its limit to knocking them out before getting a crippling hit. Which isn't great so use it when you are dealing with lots of horizontal not vertical weapons.

I considered issusing this ship a bomber plane until I realized how many crew were needed to work the bomb bay. This also led to removal of the AA guns, autocannons and grenade porthole. The grenade being rather redundant and misuses of ammunition points compared to bombs. Rifles were installed to give an light AA defense. The cannons were retained for general fighting and blasting airships to get to its bombing position. The Crow's nest was installed for its small improvement to the bombing accuracy.
