You should, since it only impacts gfx and localisation folders.
Accents will be removed and some special characters "œ" or "æ" will be empty.
It would require quite some work, someone would need to expand the font with accentuated and special upper-case characters from Windows-1252 (cf https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows-1252 ). That's around 30 characters. The tricky part may be the size (you don't want "È" to have same height as a normal "E").
