Dark Gray Team Colours - Palette Mods

Description
NOTE! The Workshop does not officially support .bina files yet, which is the file that changes the Colour Palette. Just subscribing to this mod will not work. You need to manually install this mod yourself.

To install this mod, go to the Dark Gray Team Colours - Palette Mods Workshop Folder, which can be easily found through the Workshop Menu ingame. Then go to:

Steam\steamapps\common\Age2HD\resources\_common\drs\interface

And insert the "50050.bina" file into that (interface) folder and replace the current .bina file. This mod also includes the original "50050.bina" file as a backup, which can be restored the same way. The Age2HD folder can be easily found through the Steam Library Menu, Right Clicking on Age of Empires II: HD, Properties, Local Files, Browse Local Files.

-----

This mod has Palettes that attempt to darken then Gray Player Gradiant, which is rather a popular requested mod on the Workshop. Unfortunately, with how the Workshop handles Palette Mods, or rather mods in general, this is difficult to achieve without affecting other graphics in the game. Tons of current ingame graphics uses the same colours from the Gray player and because SLP files are pretty much modified Bitmaps, changing the Greys will have an impact on the Untis & Buildings themselves.

There are two versions, one is a "Stable" version, which the goal of the mod is to keep the gradiant as close to default as possible but still darken the Gradiant as much as possible. The second is a more dynamic version that significantly reduces the brightness of the Gray Shades. Since this has much more of an impact on the Graphics in general, I've listed this as an "Unstable" version.

This is really the best I can do with the Gray Player Colour on HD & Workshop without resulting to DAT Mods, which would make it even more of a nightmare for people to get working for HD. I'm well aware about the Dark Gray mod on Voobly / AoKH, but I need to note and stress that the mod is a DAT Mod, meaning that it modifies the Dataset itself. Voobly has a much better system for handling mods, especially Dataset mods, so thats is why the Dark Gray mod on Voobly is possible, but not for HD. Even if DAT Mods were properly supported for HD, I would still be stuck since honestly, I not exactly sure how the original author accomplished that particular player colour ingame. It seems to consists of only two actual colours, which is a Dark Gray and some kind of Dark Brown, which is unusual since Player Colours are usually constructed from 8 Colours in a straight gradiant.

Even though I don't recommend the "Unstable" Palette since it pretty much removes almost all of the White Colours from Units, Buildings, Icons, Relics and the such, it's still there if people want to use it.

I have also included True Orange versions for both versions of the Darker Gray Palette. This also includes a backup version of HD's Default Palette for an easier uninstall option.

@ Freybjörn - The Orange Version is a version that combines the Gray Changes with this mod with the Orange Changes in one of my previous Palette Mods. The "True Orange" Palette makes the Orange Player Colour less Red so that it stands out much better from the Red Player Colour.

Hi. I'm sorry, but english – is not my native language and I have a question: what's mean slang "orange ver." (maybe it's as "night" versoins of something)? Grey colour with some palette tint of orange or?.. Some another?^^"""

Well, it sure sucks how a 'modernized' version of a game has LESS mod capabilities than an old version of it.

@ Niggarto el Negro - Like Pooh said, Voobly is a 3rd Party Client based around most older RTS games, but it's mostly associated with (The original retail version of) AoE2, which is their most popular hosted game. The one that Voobly has with it's modding system compared to the Workshop is that they have "Whitelisted" mods for Dataset mods, which is required to have more control over the player colours. Because of this, the "Dark Grey Patch" is able to exist on Voobly because the Author is able to directly change where Gray gets it colours from in the Palette. In order for me to acomplish the same thing, I would have to upload the mod to AoE2HD as a Dataset Mod, which HD doesn't really handle that well. The only other way is to modifly the Palette, which is what I've done, but that affects everything.

@ Winnie the Pooh - Thanks. I which there was more I could do with it though.

Thank you so much for making this! I've always wanted for the Gray colour to be darker, but have never found a mod to make that happen until now.

Voobly is a program for games to play online with ppl, like gameranger but alot less games and way better. AOE2 is on the list in Voobly (it actually being the most played game on it)

Excuse me for intruding upon a wrong thread to talk about, but what is Voobly?
Saint_Michaels_  [author] Dec 23, 2017 @ 10:47am
That is because Voobly allows "Whitelisted" Dataset Mods that are in sync with the regular dataset (or the AoC 1.0c with Userpatch 1.5). The Black Colour mod on Voobly is a Dataset Mod, so it can change the Colour Gradiant "Location" for the Gray Player Colour, which is only possible through DAT Modding. HD obviously doesn't have a "Whitelist" System, so anything that involves modding the DAT is pretty much inpractical.

Plus I think the original creator uses a trick or exploit or something, since the "Black Colour" only consists of two colours, not 8, which seems to be physically impossible, given on how Bitmaps work and how AoE2 handles it. Regardless, it still would require modding the DAT.
