Notes from the MMA jobber file, #34: There's an oddly long history of people getting fights with major promotions not because they thesmelves are noteworthy, but because they are attached to particularly noteworthy people, and in virtually every case they wind up being huge busts.

Mike Bencic--"Batman," one of the most-abused nicknames in mixed martial arts short of "Pitbull" and "The Assassin"--was barely, of his own accord, a fighter. Bencic had one MMA fight to his credit, a Jersey event where he submitted the 0-1 Jose Tabora. He came to prominence not for his fighting, but for a student: During Mirko Cro Cop's emergence as Japan's biggest MMA attraction, Bencic was his grappling coach. His role in the development of their biggest meal ticket and Cro Cop's own vouching for him got Bencic a contract with Pride, and he made his international television debut, at 1-0, against, uh, Alistair Overeem.

Alistair Overeem is a huge challenge for good, seasoned fighters; Bencic was neither. Overeem took him down easily--Bencic pulled guard, essentially--and controlled the grappling instructor on the ground, battering him liberally with knees and eventually causing him to submit to strikes. It was a tough start, but Bencic was committed to trying again, and agreed to complete his two-fight contract with a Pride: Bushido 2 showdown against...Mario Sperry, BJJ master and vale tudo champion.

Pride was not kind to Bencic. Neither was Sperry, whose grappling proved irrelevant; Bencic moved blindly forward and Sperry knocked him clean out in eleven seconds with the first real punch he threw.

Bencic never fought again, retiring at 1-2. He does personal fitness instructionals now, and spends his free time making fun of fat people on instagram and MSpainting "Batman was here" on pictures of butts.
