Joe Son

One of the most difficult things to address in the history of things you love is acknowledging that parts of that history will, inevitably, be played by people who don't deserve to be remembered. Joe Son is an indelible part of MMA history. He was the sport's first freakshow: A largely talentless joke of a fighter who danced to the ring, carried a crucifix, wore a thong, made everyone laugh and never won a match. He was an actor and a conman whose charisma carried him through MMA, wrestling and Hollywood. He was memorable even in defeat.

He's also a violent sexual predator and a murderer.

In 1990, Joe Son participated in a heinous two-person assault on a woman in Orange County. While in prison for the assault, he beat his cellmate to death. He's serving 27 to life. He will almost certainly die in prison.

There isn't really anything you can say to make that better. Anytime Joe Son comes up in MMA journalism he's spoken of behind the protective comic veneer of "boy, he was a terrible fighter" and "it sure is karmically appropriate that Keith Hackney punched him in the groin so much!" but that's the equivalent of whistling in the dark. Joe Son's failings as a fighter do not overshadow his life; they only make it more egregious that he had a ten-year career in combat sports and appeared in a massively-loved Hollywood comedy despite being a violent sexual predator.

Joe Son showed up once at the UFC and twice in Pride. I'm not leaving out any part of this history project, and that's why he's here. Let there be no veneration of the man implied by his presence, and let any memories of him be seeded with salt.
