Tra Telligman, man. Tra Telligman was one of the toughest dudes the sport ever saw. Let's get the elephant out of the room: When Tra was about eighteen months old he was nearly killed by a car, resulting in the loss of most of the right side of his chest, including a lung, some ribs and most of his pectoral. Most people do not survive this. Tra not only survived, he reflected on his permanent sucking chest wound and decided to become a professional fighter--a decision he made when he was 8. Telligman was MMA's first real spoiler: Organizations repeatedly brought him in as a warm body only to experience surprising upsets. He won the SuperBrawl 1 tournament when everyone expected it to be a showcase for Jay R. Palmer in Hawaii, he went to Japan and took the surging Keiichiro Yamamiya to a draw in Pancrase, he submitted undefeated heavyweight prospect Brad Kohler in the UFC, and most famously, Pride brought him back after his losing debut as another warm body for Igor Vovchanchyn to knock out and he shocked the world by winning a decision instead. To put this in perspective, Igor had only lost one of his last forty fights, and that was to Mark Coleman, the best in the world at the time; Telligman was 6-3-1 and hadn't won a fight in more than three years.

That was Tra Telligman in a nutshell. He wasn't the strongest, the best or the most technical of fighters, but he was one of the toughest, and he made a game out of beating the odds. His accomplishments were modest--he retired at 7-5-1--but a full half of his fights were against world champions, and not a single one of them had an easy night.

Moveset, stats, logic and four attires (UFC 54 vs Sylvia / Pride 9 vs Barreto / UFC 12 vs Vitor / Pancrase: Alive 9 vs Yamamiya). There's no way to even remotely simulate the whole missing-half-of-his-chest thing, so unfortunately you just have to pretend it's there. Er, not there.

From what I remember of his interviews, Igor started noticing extra pain and trouble with his hands after the 2000 GP--which makes sense, after half a decade of often bareknuckle fighting--and I feel like the wear and tear becoming evident for such an otherwise stoic guy signaled the beginning of the end. Tra Telligman is just the universe's warning messenger, I guess.

Anyway, thank you, I'm really glad you're enjoying it.

I think Telligman beating Igor gave me PTSD because I hadn't thought about him in years but then reading your delightful summary of Tra's MMA career I had vivid flashbacks of that fight and the aftermath. I was (and am) such a huge Igor fan and couldn't believe he'd lost to this ham-and-egger. Looking back on it, that was sort of the beginning of Igor's slide and the transition into the era of Big Nog and Fedor (with Cro Cop and Barnett right there with them) being the top heavyweights. Igor never put together a big win streak again, moved down to 205, etc. Of course the more obvious choice for the moment that began Igor's decline was when Cro Cop kicked his head into orbit, but Igor lost to Telligman and Mario Sperry prior to that. Keep up the great work, man, this is my favorite collection on the workshop, not just for the edits themselves but also the write ups -- always both informative and hilarious.
