Gilbert Yvel is maybe MMA's most profound combination of inspirational and infuriating. The fact that his career existed at all is a testament to him: He was an orphan in the most criminally-inclined neighborhood of Amsterdam and only fell into MMA because of his brother. He parlayed that happenstance into a successful combat sports career as one of the most powerful, dynamic strikers of his day, and his hands (and knees, and feet) carried him through 39 victories--33 by knockout--and two world championships. In the twenty years of his career he fought across Rings, M-1, the WVC, Pride, the UFC, Cage Rage, K-1 and even Affliction for the five minutes of its existence. It is impossible to not call him inspiring.

That being said, here's the other side of things: Gilbert liked cheating. A lot. He has the rare distinction of three losses by disqualification: Once for biting Karimula Barkalaev, once for repeatedly eye-gouging Don Frye, and once, in youtube fame, for knocking out the referee. And that doesn't include the many instances of illegal activities he got away with--my personal favorite is the time he avoided a takedown by grabbing ahold of the cage and then, while hanging from it, repeatedly and also illegally axe-kicked his opponent in the head. Yvel was an incredibly exciting, talented fighter to watch, but he was also uniquely frustrating. And in the end, while Yvel was an extremely successful fighter, he could never really break into the top ranks. He was king of the midcard. There is no shame in that. But there's a little shame in biting people.

Moveset, stats, logic and four attires (Pride 9 vs Vitor / Pride 34 vs Shoji / UFC 108 vs JDS / MFC World Championship '97 vs Tsygolnik). He has a low-percentage chance to eye-gouge you, so be warned.

My deep apologies to the rest of your household. (But it is hilarious.)

It is extremely, extremely true. You never knew what you were going to get with him, but you knew it wasn't going to be boring.

Nice! Always enjoyed watching Gilbert because about 99% of the time whether he won or lost there was going to be an explosion of fireworks: either a knockout, submission or some sort of eye gouge-y or ref punching trainwreck. Only guy I can think of who has 100% of his MMA wins by stoppage, too.
