Firebase Georgina (old)

Description
Please do not subscribe to this item. The map is now included in the official game, so there is no need to download it, and doing so can cause conflicts. PS hi Angus! Can't find a crankset that was supposedly picked in Norwood the other day for someone named Glazer. Not to put any pressure on you, just to prove it's me.

Firebase Georgina

May 5th, 1970.

The Vietnamese dry season is coming to an end, and the monsoon winds of the rainy season carry cool, wet air from the sea to the highlands. On a small hilltop in Gia Lai province, an American platoon sets out from Firebase Georgina to patrol the area below.

This map features six objectives:
  • A - Contact
While on patrol in a grass field, an American platoon takes fire from across the half-planted rice paddy to the south, and tries to hold out at the low berm between the fields.
  • B - Burn Zone
A defoliated zone, still smoldering with napalm residue and steaming with unexploded howitzer shells. Quick sprints from crater to crater are the only way to survive.
  • C - Ammo Cache
An old French villa, destroyed some time ago by Vietnamese fighters. The thick Vietnamese jungle slowly creeps back into the walls of the house, but the clearing it provides is still wide enough to serve as a mortar pit. The American patrol destroyed a munitions cache here before meeting resistance further south.
  • D - Rice Fields
Abandoned recently by the fleeing villagers who lived up the hill, the rice fields are important both as rations and as a base from which to attack Thac Nuoc village. While standing in the field, there is no cover at all, but crouching below the tops of the rice provides excellent concealment.
  • E - Thac Nuoc Village
Once a small fishing and farming village halfway up the flank of Hill 569, abandoned since the establishment of the American firebase up the hill. It is located on a small stream between two waterfalls, and is a logical stepping-off point for the attack on the firebase.
  • F - Firebase Georgina
Built to observe and provide fire support on the fields and jungle below, Firebase Georgina houses a platoon of GI’s. Bunkers and a communications trench defend the southeast approach.
The map is 36 minutes long, and has 750 NVA tickets and 600 US tickets.

This map is in Beta. This means that the map could conceivably be called finished now, but I am not ruling out the possibility of further updates or fixes.

Because of technical difficulties and the upcoming contest, the radio soundtrack will not be included in the file for a currently unknown amount of time. However, I posted the track on YouTube, and the list of songs I used in the radio track is as follows:

Mr. Soul - Buffalo Springfield
Hush - Deep Purple
Omaha - Moby Grape
Drop Down Mama - Tom Rush
Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Magic Carpet Ride - Steppenwolf
Jumpin' Jack Flash - The Rolling Stones
Magic Bus - The Who
[Volunteers - Jefferson Airplane]
[Drinking Muddy Water - The Yardbirds]
[Are You Experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience]
Hey Joe - The Byrds
Gimme Some Lovin' - The Spencer Davis Group

Songs in brackets were in the long, 45-minute version of the radio track, but now that the map has gone down to 36 minutes in B1, they sadly had to be cut. If you liked the music that I kept in, though, I recommend you check out the songs in brackets as well.

This map is semi-fictional, and was partially inspired by the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord[en.wikipedia.org], which also occurred in the late spring and early summer of 1970. In the case of Ripcord, the US 101st Airborne was preparing to carry out operations in the valley below when they were unexpectedly attacked by the PAVN 324th Div., while in this map the a platoon of the US 17th Air Cav. has patrolled through the valley below before meeting an unexpectedly heavy ambush from PAVN regulars.

In part it was also inspired by the original E3 2015 reveal trailer for Rising Storm 2. I was very excited by the wide open spaces shown in that trailer, and I've always felt that RO/RS maps have never really taken advantage of open spaces as much as they might have — Bridges, IwanBerg, Ogledow being obvious exceptions, but these are a few custom maps out of many. The two factors combined to inspire me to make a map using as little vertical and man-made cover as possible, at least for some objectives, while for others I went for the somewhat easier option of houses and sandbag walls.

It also incorporates some ideas that may seem stupid on their face. On objective D, for example, there is absolutely no cover of any sort, but crouching players can find effective concealment behind rice. If this objective design turns out to be a terrible idea that only leads to confusion, I am open to changing it, but I would like to at least see it in action. The crazy ideas sometimes work. In general, smoke grenades, flanking, and commander abilities will be very important tools on this map, which hopefully will encourage a more tactical style of play.

I like the music and i'm glad its listed since your video got taken down, but what was the dj clips and LSD PSA those added so much atmosphere to it. It was cool, i'm wondering if its going to be re-uploaded or you can find me the LSD psa.

That’s sad but understandable. However would it still be possible to make a small mod that shares the Art sublevel from the real map and adds the radio soundtrack? (you wrote something about tech. difficulties) So no licensing would be needed.
And could you provide a download link for the latest radio audio file ?

Sadly the answer is no, the radio has to stay out. I've actually grown to prefer the map without it now, but either way, regardless of what I prefer, Tripwire/Antimatter wouldn't want to license all of the songs for just one map.

@Zachery Moe: Just wondering if your radio soundtrack will be included into the official version in a future update? The immersion is there and it reminds me of “Stars & Bars” from Battlefield Vietnam :)

Suggestions for the map: Perhaps some more cover at alpha and especially bravo as you maybe like some destroyed helis or some sandbags also maybe put some boulders as cover for vc while attacking foxtrot

Sounds like Jungle Raid, but that was more of a swamp than a lake. Can't think of anything else.

This is the only workshop item that has ever existed, but there were some older versions with less detailing and a different C objective.
