Описание
Wallid Ismail: The man who was hunting Gracies before Sakuraba made it sexy. Wallid is sort of an elemental spirit of anger, and he channeled that anger into his grappling: It was both ruthless and explosive, marked by making very few errors and violently exploting any openings his opponents left him. He beat Ralph, Renzo and Royce Gracie--before the famous Sakuraba/Gracie fight that put the first official loss on his record, Royce and Wallid grappled in 1998 in the prime of both men's careers and Wallid choked him unconscious in five minutes.

Unfortunately, that was BJJ, and he is yet another entrant in the long history of great martial artists who couldn't replicate those heights in MMA. He wasn't unsuccessful, he won an IVC title and he retired at 9-3, but all three of those losses came during his biggest, most visible fights, and one of them included getting knocked out by Mr. Pride himself, Akira Shoji. If you're ever bored, watch his UFC fight against Kazuo Takahashi--it's two legitimately skilled fighters with no idea what the rules are who wind up just eye-gouging each other and punching each other in the crotch for fifteen minutes. Old days, old ways.

Moveset, stats, logic and four attires (Pride 4 vs Shoji / UFC 12 vs Takahashi / IVC 3 vs Johil / Oscar de Jiu-Jitsu vs Royce).

Wallid is now the promoter and CEO of the UFC promotion/brand, Jungle Fight, a Brazillian MMA event show casing the best unknown names in the sport, i'ts worth checking out.

Thank you, and that league sounds completely awesome--and a lot like what I want to do when I'm finally done making all these dudes. I'm with you on MMA; it's still great and it'd be a lie to say it hasn't objectively improved, but the purity of the old days was a thing to behold. (This is also why Ganryujima is pretty cool.)

I've heard that about Wallid too; I don't think there was ever any proof or admission, but it seemed pretty believable.

Awesome! Always look forward to your edits and the corresponding writeups. I'm running a league using guys from the early days of MMA (Pancrase, early PRIDE, RINGS, early UFC, some of the "shoot-style" workers from UWFi, etc) so your edits are forming a lot of my roster. I still follow MMA but even though the quality of the training/athletes and the overall level of competition has improved, something was lost along the way that has lessened the appeal of the days when it was referred to as "NHB," vale tudo, etc, IMO.

Your write-up reminds me... didn't the Gracie family essentially blacklist Wallid from participating in the early UFC events because of his grappling wins over their boys? Seems like I've read that somewhere.
