Naoya Ogawa

Naoya Ogawa is a great case study in not knowing where a gimmick ends and a person begins. Ogawa was one of the fastest-rising competitors in the history of judo, amassing multiple national and world championships and ultimately an Olympic silver medal, but his peers remembered him as much for his arrogance as his talent--he was so gifted that he didn't have to try as hard as everyone else, and thus he never did. This led him to a pro-wrestling and MMA persona as a hothead: The King of Recklessness, a technical genius who couldn't stop himself from getting into wild brawls and generally being a huge jerk. This is also why his MMA career is primarily remembered for Fedor murdering him in about a minute. If he'd dedicated himself to MMA, he might have had a really incredible career as one of its early heavyweights; as it is, he's more of a punchline, with a record padded out by pro-wrestlers and non-grapplers. Does a real good impression of an airplane, though.
