Information for those who don't know what Liechtenstein is
Liechtenstein is a fairly small country located in Europe. Liechtenstein is taller than it is wide, with the widest point of the country being only 1.2 miles across. Roughly 60 square miles, it’s nestled right in between Switzerland and Austria. Since both Switzerland and Austria are landlocked, and they are the only countries that border Liechtenstein, that makes Liechtenstein double landlocked. The only other country that encounters this stunning lack of access to a sea or ocean is Uzbekistan. Liechtenstein has just one lake, but that lake is man made. Liechtenstein has plenty of areas to ski, with skiing being one of their highlight attractions. Liechtenstein has 10 Olympic medals, but all of them are in Alpine Skiing. These 10 medals in combination with a low population gives Liechtenstein the highest amount of Olympic medals per capita of any country. Liechtenstein has a population of just above 38,000 people, which is about 1/3rd of the population of the city of Gresham. One specific person in that 38,000 is His Serene Highness The Prince Regnant of Liechtenstein Hans-Adam II, who has ruled the country since he assumed the crown on November 13th, 1989. Liechtenstein is a Principality, meaning it is a monarchy ruled by a prince and not a king. The country was founded in October of 1608 by Karl I. There are a lot of Liechtensteinian castles in and around Liechtenstein, with the main palace being Vaduz Castle. Vaduz is the capitol of Liechtenstein, with a population of 5,500. The largest city is Schaan, with a population of 6,000. Liechtenstein does not have a military, and instead relies on the military power of Switzerland and Austria for protection. Liechtenstein’s last military mission was in 1860, when they sent 80 troops to Italy. They returned with 81 people because they made a friend and encountered no fighting. Switzerland accidentally invaded Liechtenstein in 2006, when a unit of 170 Swiss troops were hiking in the forest near the Liechtenstein border, which neither country enforces. A large rainstorm occurred, and the Swiss troops got lost and wandered unknowingly into Liechtenstein. They made it .9 miles into the country before they realized their mistake and quickly turned around and went back home. The Foreign Affairs spokesperson for Liechtenstein said that the Swiss military apologized for the incident, and that it was resolved over “a glass of white wine.” Switzerland also accidentally bombarded a Liechtensteinian forest in the 90’s during a drill involving artillery. The forest was partially burnt, but the incident was resolved peacefully. Liechtenstein has a police force of 125 individuals, made up of by a civilian staff of 38 and a police staff of 87. Liechtenstein has one of the lowest crime rates of any country. Only 8 people are currently in jail in Liechtenstein, and any individual who receives a sentence longer than 2 years is sent to an Austrian prison. Liechtenstein has 155 miles of paved roadways and 56 miles of bicycle paths. There is a 5.9 mile railway that goes from Buchs, Switzerland to Feldkirch, Austria that passes through Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein has 4 railway stations. Liechtenstein has a bus company for public transport that acts as a subsidiary of the Swiss bus network centered out of Buchs and Sargans. Liechtenstein has no airports, making the closest airport to the country be Zürich’s airport. Liechtenstein has a number of museums, with the largest being the Kunstmuseum, a museum focused on modern and contemporary art. There is also the Liechtenstein National Museum, which shows off the culture of Liechtenstein and its natural history. Liechtenstein also has a stamp museum and a skiing museum. Some of the most famous historical sites in Liechtenstein are Vaduz Castle, Gutenberg Castle, and the ruins of Schellenberg. The private art collection of the Prince of Liechtenstein is kept at the Liechtenstein Museum, located in Vienna, Austria. Liechtenstein has a national holiday where all residents of the country are invited to Vaduz Castle for a barbecue style event with complimentary beer. The legal age to consume alcohol in Liechtenstein is not set, but the legal age to buy alcohol there is 16. Liechtenstein has one TV channel, 1FLTV. Liechtenstein has one radio station, Liechtenstein Radio. There are two newspapers in Liechtenstein, Liechtensteiner Volksblatt and Liechtensteiner Vaterland. The official language of Liechtenstein is Alemannic German, a special dialect of German.
