The opening hours of Dark Souls III had me, honestly, pretty worried. At first, the game seemed really difficult. I had a tough time making headway, even if it was steady. I’m not sure exactly when it happened, but something cracked and things stopped being so tough. The bosses are cool looking and often have awesome cut scenes or memorable dialogue, but a few of them have been downright easy. Most of them are pretty well-tuned, taking me a few tries, but not so many that breaking my keyboard/mouse (yes i finished the game with that wierd control bind on KB and mouse) seemed like a good option. There are a few truly difficult bosses that will test your patience, skill, and commitment, but stepping through the white fog that isolates each boss was not even intimidating as i thought. The game world, too, seems more forgiving. Bonfires are still a huge relief to find for the most part, but they’ve been quite close together a few times. You’re also bound to encounter an unexpected glitch or get stuck in a horrible camera angle now and then. I know some people will knock the game for those things, but to me, they’re just part of the territory when playing a Souls title. Story for me is unique and fascinating as the whole design of Souls world. Dark Souls III is a fascinating, engrossing, and thoroughly enjoyable new beginning of sorts for one of gaming’s bravest and boldest legacies. A fitting way to end, if that will indeed be the fate of the franchise. (sadly)
