Any title a man draws up for himself isn't worth wearing.
~ Yakuza 0, 2015

I have no will of my own, but I have instincts. To turn something inanimate into something living. To turn a dream into reality. To turn existence into life. And I aspire to go higher all the time.
~ The Void/Turgor, 2008

For twisted are, were and will be, the paths of the Miracle.

The only me is me. Are you sure the only you is you?
~ Silent Hills P.T.

If you're not with me... nothing means anything.
~ Yakuza 0, 2015

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain...
Rest in peace, Rutger Hauer.

— Ludwig van Beethoven

"In the end we shall have had enough of cynicism, skepticism and humbug, and we shall want to live more musically."
— Vincent van Gogh

Love is love. Black lives matter. Trans rights are human rights.
Respect the folk who make your games. Empathize with your fellow human beings. It's not that hard.

"You're not the only one with a dragon on his back, boy."
— Yakuza 0, 2015

"I'm morally obliged to find whatever out there is worth living for."
~ David Bowie

It contains for me a strong indication of how beautiful and wonderful life is and how I regret that I will have to relinquish my hold upon it.
~ David Bowie, on his song "Heathen (The Rays)"

"Finding it, though, that's not the hard part. It's letting go."
~ Father Elijah, Fallout: New Vegas - Dead Money

"If the prospect of living in a world where trying to respect the basic rights of those around you and valuing each other simply because we exist are such daunting, impossible tasks then what sort of world are we left with?"
~ Wonder Woman

"Direct action is not always the best way. It is a far greater victory to make another see through your eyes than to close theirs forever."
~ Kreia, Knights of the Old Republic II

Everything has a hidden meaning. Lies do not exist; and neither is it possible to invent a fantasy. Myths are always true - you just need to find the right interpretation.
~ Pathologic (Мор. Утопия), 2005

If you agree to die without understanding, you will simply cease to exist.
~ The Marble Nest, 2016

I just... wanted to preserve a sliver of the miraculous in this world.
~ Pathologic 2, 2019

A man chooses. A slave obeys.
~ Bioshock, 2007

“It’s a head-spinning dichotomy — of the lust for life against the finality of everything. It’s those two things raging against each other, you know? And that produces these moments that feel like real truth … That is the entire story, right there. That’s it. There’s no more to be said.”
~ David Bowie, on the meaning of art

Mankind could hold the universe in the palm of his hand if only he could first unclench his fist.
~ Alpheus Togra, in the instruction manual to Dark Reign

"The madness which is called Dionysus is no sickness, no debility in life, but a companion of life at its healthiest. It is the tumult which erupts from its innermost recesses when they mature and force their way to the surface. This attends all moments of creation, constantly changes ordered existence into chaos, and ushers in primal salvation and primal pain - and in both, the primal wildness of being."
~ Walter Otto provides some food for thought

One who is afraid to talk is afraid to act. Forfeit responsibility, and you forfeit choice.

The need FOR EYES
If you take nothing else from this review, Lost in Vivo is a meticulously crafted survival horror that emulates the old guard of the genre, like SILENT HILL and the original Resident Evil titles. You pick your way through decrepit and frequently disturbing locations, finding ammunition, weapons, and strangely penned notes or old cassette tapes. What astounds me about Lost in Vivo is that, even after playing who knows how many other horror titles of the classic genre, is that I can still be frightened by it. It's a genuinely affecting game, with the primary theme of claustrophobia crafted so well that it becomes hard to want to push forward into new tunnels.

The game's quest to save your dog drives you ever deeper into labyrinthian tunnels. Horror design is used and subverted constantly. There are so many clever tricks that I wish I could discuss more in this review, but if I did, it would spoil the game's frequent scares. One minor one I liked was the fact that the map you could pick up was old or incorrect - it helped maybe 75% of the time, but certain areas had to be charted manually, adding to a sense that you were stepping into an unknown or liminal space.

Lost in Vivo has impressive enemy designs that stay frightening even after multiple encounters with them. They are all kinds of grungy and disturbing - a freaky ghost girl with extra legs and a grotesque face that you can't even bear to look at is one. A creature of flesh that stalks you indiscriminately through a storage facility is another. The game also uses its opening sequence to build towards the most effective jumpscare I've ever experienced in my life. I genuinely reacted without conscious thought, smashed the left mouse button, and leapt into the air. I've never been quite so viscerally frightened by a game like that, and I loved it. It doesn't rely on scripted elements to achieve its horror so much as allows you to stumble into the horror yourself.

So the game is fun to play, clever, and fiendishly scary at points. The main let-down, sadly, is the game's story. While the individual elements are quite cool as you piece together the context behind the game's various stages, and there is a fantastically well-done bit in the middle of the game about body image, there is very little to ground us in the character otherwise. So we're almost playing as a self-insert, but I feel that some additional grounding would have helped (i.e. as with a character like James Sunderland from SH2, who you can gain contextual information about the world from). Things were a little too muddy to connect with, so while this was fun to piece together the dots outside of the game, I just wish the story were a little stronger, a bit more defined.

This is not to say that Lost in Vivo is all of a sudden "not worth playing". Because it very much is. It is a horror game that understands the importance of the "game" part. It's not just a walking simulator with scripted jumpscares, or trite setpieces. No, it's a game that forces the player to confront the nightmares, to emerge a stronger person for it. Lost in Vivo is a game about bravery, about finding the strength to go on in the darkest places. It is a marvelously effective horror game, and one that will stay with me for a very, very long time.
