I had this game on my wishlist for a couple years and was always hesitant to buy it. However, I finally went ahead and tried it after watching a couple youtube vids.

12 hours into the game and I figured I was getting the hang of it. until.....

I was simply trying to add a section of a raft floor and as soon as I released the part for snap on connection. the whole raft just disappeared. all of it's content and all of 12 hours of effort.

So I loaded a previous save, and tried to continue. After making a raft and traveling from one island to another. I noticed the horizon was no longer flat. that is to say the character was walking around with a head tilt. very disorienting. Once again I had to close the game and reload a save to continue.

Another issue was when I made adjustment to the graphic settings. After doing so and reloading the game, all the trees that were cut were suddenly all back. this insta growth disrupted a work area I had cleared and sent items like 4 dew catchers flying into space.

Still trying to like the game I once again loaded a save and played for a time until the final bug curtailed any ability to continue. After drinking water to satisfy thirst. an error occurred on the character stats. instead of a number beside thirst and tired. 0 to 100. it was replaced by the letters NaN and would not clear.

The NaN issue was reported since July 22. and has not been addressed as of February 5 of 2023. Also since I did not catch this right away it corrupted all 4 saves which is the maximum that are kept and get bumped down with each new save game.

This brought the game to a non playable end.

All of these issue are surprising for a game that has been in development since 2018 (5+ years)

So now the developer has my money and I no longer have a playable game. It has been shelved and may take another 5 years before these things are corrected.

The developer himself said in the forums.

"The tree hack has no priority for us to fix at the moment,"

"The "tilting head" issue is something we can't explain why it happens. However, the optimisations we're working on at the moment will make the game run cleaner, which means that issues like the "tilting head" will disappear (or so we hope)."

Imagine.. this is from the developer. "we cant explain"..." or so we hope"....


I should have left it on the wishlist. total buyers regret....

Save your money people. this one does not work after 5+ years of early access development. and it does not seem like these and other issues will be fixed anytime soon.

Keep the islanders fed and they will be..... appreciative of your efforts.

By far the best Virtual Novel presentation second to none.

From visuals, music, story, cut scenes, animation and choices.

The Characters capture your interest and invoke emotional attachment from first impressions to primal abandon.

If you plan to buy just one VN this year. This is the one your looking for.

I originally had an issue with game crashes, however the community was very helpful in pinpointing where the problem was. Which was most likely a driver issue.

I mention this because my review not only reflects my enjoyment of the game but also that of the community within.

I have participated in all X games since Beyond the Frontier. and X4 immerses me in a world many could only dream about or at the very least watch on TV.

As fan of Babylon 5 and all other space related visuals, X4 puts you in the middle of this genre with awe inspiring wonder and possibilities only limited by your imagination.

There is a certain level of complexity and as such a learning curve to clime. Once it begins to make sense, you find yourself looking for more.. and finding it.

I have but scratched the surface, and I look forward to what else can be achieve.

I waited for the winter sale because I found the retail price a tad high for my liking.

The game is fun, and addictive. something satisfying about breeding your own horses and then watching them win some races, either as the rider or on the sidelines by hiring a jockey to do the riding.

You have a farm element to develop, a story line to guide you along... stables, training, and even a Rival racer within the story pressing you forward.

I have not tried the multiplayer aspect yet, but this is a nice little game to pass the time..
