A brief description:

Cat Café Manager is a resource management game, and a grindy one at that. You lure stray cats, adopt them, and then do very little to interact with them beyond that. There is a “story” to the game, however brief, where you learn more about five of the town’s citizens and about your (deceased) grandma. Mostly, it is just a very bad management game.

Why I don’t recommend it:

Cat Café Manager is tagged as Simulation, Management, Strategy, Cats, and Cozy. I liked the “cats” and “cozy” part of it, but I should have paid more to the word “Manager” in the title and the “Management” tag…because that’s all this game is. You gather unique resource types from the customers that frequent your café (Businessmen, Artists, Vagabonds, Fishermen, Witches, Punks). You then use these resources to buy café furniture and appliance upgrades, and to expand the size of your café. You can also hire employees and adopt stray cats that effectively become more employees. If you’re looking for a cheap, kinda crappy management game, you might like it? But if you’re looking for a fun casual game that lets you design your very own cute cozy cat café, this ain’t it.

The Good:
  • Simple game that was easy to pick up
  • Cats! but not as many as there should be ☹ More cats become available in “endgame” endless mode (after you’ve beaten the main story), but that’s not the same as having them in the “campaign” main story part of the game…
  • At the end of the game you unlock an “endless mode,” which is really what I wanted from the get-go. There is honestly more content available in the endless mode than what you’re able to get beating the campaign.
The Bad:
  • I ran into multiple bugs. Nothing that breaks the game, but a few were annoying (like getting stuck on a menu screen for awhile). The worst bug was when employees would get stuck and say they didn’t have a path, even though they clearly had enough room around them to move freely.
  • Why can’t I build WALLS? My toilets are right next to my kitchen and serving area! WHY can’t I build WALLS?!?!
  • I wanted this game to be more about designing and decorating the cat café, and to a lesser extent about the managing-the-café part. Turns out this is entirely a resource management game.
  • After a certain point (once you’ve hit endless mode), you barely need to pay attention to the game anymore. I wrote this review while letting the game “autoplay” days for me.
  • The balance of resources gained vs. cost is just very, very bad. You have to grind resources for way too long before making what feels like meaningful progress. And that’s the problem: the resource balance just feels bad. The scaling is bad, too. Juggling resources is a huge pain until all of a sudden it’s just not at all and you don’t have to pay attention to it anymore. There should be more of a “ramp up.”
  • Employees stand around doing nothing for way too much of the time.
  • Some furniture items/sets are better than others, forcing you to choose the “best” ones and not the ones you want to have (for example, “eastern tea house” items are way better than “pub,” so you’re SOL if you want to use pub items instead of eastern tea house)
  • All the best story bits with the characters happens in endless mode, after you’ve “completed” the main story. Why are the best parts of the game after the main story?
  • Should be allowed to speed up passage of time when you’re in endless mode end-game
  • Many of the visuals in the game are unclear. I figured things out after awhile, but this information should be readily available somewhere.
  • Not that this matters too much, but the achievements are pure grind. I wanted to 100% the game because I always try to if I feel it’s possible and know I’ll be writing a review for the game. The achievements in this game were just time sinks and not fun to get.
