Elements of Celeste, Cave Story/choose-your-metroidvania, and a bit of Nier Automata are all here, if you liked any of those you'd probably like Kandria. Especially if you've played Celeste before, that'll be the first thing you're reminded of when it comes to the core movement and this game's source of challenge.

But after completing the story I can say Kandria is its own game and I didn't feel like I was just playing any of those others yet again. It was also refreshing to play something without ability and upgrade locks, though there are a couple movement and combat tricks you learn as you go. Very calming atmosphere even though it's post-apocalyptic and some of the rooms I came across were challenging enough that I gave up on them for the time being. There's a bunch of accessibility options if the challenge is too much but you just want to explore, though I haven't messed with them yet.

Beating these helped me realize why everyone suggests Ys 6 be your first Ys game. If you liked that, you'll probably like these. I also played Ys Origin first, which I think helped me appreciate the story background more.

Ys 1 has two cheap bosses on Hard+ mode, and having a max level cap you can reach early means you can't grind your way out of it. Ys 2 was a lot more balanced, though one boss seemed to require having a set of items that weren't even used for the fight in order to advance. Ys 2 also made the bump system combat a lot easier, or maybe it was just being used to it after Ys 1....

Bad character control make you feel like you do have the plague, so it works. Enjoyed the cartography.

It would have been better as a pure casual exploration game, the creature wasn't fun at all. For the final component in the game I ran into the creature again and after spending 30 minutes failing at driving it off / backing away / hiding / running I went and installed the mod to remove it. Should have done that after maybe the third creature encounter.

8/10, Robin Hanson's head never made an appearance.

Penumbra: Black Plague remains the best, but if you like the others from Frictional Games, you'll like this one.

Fun, worth playing. As predicted not as good as Penumbra: Black Plague.

Lots of free content to explore, great game if you love Middle Earth. VIP program is fair if you want to do more quests, though it doesn't include all the expansions.
