It's no secret that at this point, I'm weak when it comes to cute anime girls. Despite Slobbish Dragon Princess is a short visual novel, it even implements multiple adorable girls with two main ones. All in all, I'd say the strong point of this game definitely is the artwork, although I have to admit that I liked the interactions between the characters quite a lot. It's important to mention that this kind of game isn't everyone's cup of tea, but hey, as long as you appreciate comedic slice-of-life games, there isn't anything you can do wrong with giving Slobbish Dragon Princess a try.

What's A Lizard Doing Here?!

Slobbish Dragon Princess revolves around Takeru who is a NEET and lives in a dojo. Well, that already implies that his life didn't go the direction he wanted to, but anyway, he has a lovely friend next door who is always there for him. One day, he finds a strange lizard on the streets and decided to take it home. As "Haru" is the only noise it's able to make, the name of the lizard was decided quickly as well. Suddenly, a lot of dragons are appearing and, unfortunately, they aren't peaceful either. Luckily, Haru turns out to be the princess of the dragons, and thus, the unfortunate events can be avoided.

What Kind of Game is Slobbish Dragon Princess?

Where do I even begin? Obviously, there is comedy and romance as the main genres of Slobbish Dragon Princess whilst it adds slice-of-life as well. However, this visual novel is unlike most romcom games I previously played.

  • Let's begin with the comedy. The whole game is comedic and this becomes noticeable pretty soon into the game. The purpose of all scenes is to make the reader laugh and thus, the story is non-existent. This means that the scenes are not related to each other at all but feel more like random pieces of Takeru's life added together. There is no logical order and even if one of them got skipped, the reader wouldn't notice it. I personally liked that concept as it's even more light-hearted this way and to be honest, playing Slobbish Dragon Princess was just relaxing in its own way, and, in addition to that, I could just take my mind off while playing through it.

  • Next is the romance. Whilst the story of Slobbish Dragon Princess isn't in the foreground, the player still gets to know the characters better. Thus, I could still understand the relationship progress between Takeru and his future girlfriend. However, even in this regard, this visual novel managed to surprise me as the romance didn't turn out the way I expected it to. But that's up to everyone to find out on their own. Something I'd like to mention here is that despite romance being in the foreground, Slobbish Dragon Princess is not meant to be romantic and it rather feels like it got added for a satisfying end. Thus, Takeru sometimes does questionable actions while trying to find out whom he really likes.

  • So, let's move to the last component, slice-of-life. I somehow always felt attracted to this genre in one or another way, as it most likely equals light-heartedness as well. In this case, Slobbish Dragon Princess definitely is light-hearted and during the whole game, there are hardly any serious moments, although some of them still exist. All in all, I found that the slice-of-life scenes just fit well into the game thanks to the main focus of the comedy along with the romance that got implemented into the game. By all means, don't take Slobbish Dragon Princess seriously.

Endings, Choices, And Their Impact

Although there is a choice implemented in Slobbish Dragon Princess, it rather feels like a kinetic novel. There is only one possible end available as well and thus, the choice only slightly altered the dialogue before continuing with the main branch again. Oh, on second thought, there is also a CG to unlock here, but other than that, I didn't understand why the decision even got added. Anyway, on a bright note, I was quite satisfied with the way the visual novel ended and there were some adorable and romantic moments here and there, although they were rather rare. However, this only made me appreciate them even more.

Graphics, Japanese Voice-Acting, and The Immersion

As aforementioned, the graphics are the best thing about Slobbish Dragon Princess. Thanks to the wonderful execution, the characters felt lively. During the playthrough, there are a lot of gorgeous CGs popping up, as well as subtle implemented animations here and there that greatly increased the immersion. In addition to that, the playful chibi-styled CGs also matched the light-hearted and silly theme of the game very well. All in all, Slobbish Dragon Princess is a pure eye-candy game and there isn't a single CG that I didn't find absolutely stunning. Luckily, the game adds high-quality Japanese voice-acting which made the experience even better.

So, what do we have in the end?

I have to admit I ended up liking Slobbish Dragon Princess more than I anticipated. Whilst the whole premise of the game is silly and full of unrelated comedic scenes, I loved the light-heartedness during playing. This game doesn't stress out the player with sad scenes nor requires them to think a lot about the happenings but instead, the whole purpose of Slobbish Dragon Princess is to make its reader laugh. Which it accomplished pretty well, in my case. Anyway, while Slobbish Dragon Princess stands out with its fantastic artwork, it managed to be quite an enjoyable read, even if it's very short.
