I do not know how many episodes are planned for the Kirakira Stars Idol Project series, however, keep them coming! Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika is the third entry and managed to keep up the quality. Furthermore, I am curious about future episodes as the girls are utterly adorable and I would like to see more of them. Anyway, something I love about the idols genre is to see the girls grow throughout the playthrough and overcoming hardships that might occur along the way.

As a piece of side information, I didn't manage to download the 18+ patch, and thus, my review will focus solely on the all-ages version of Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika. However, like in the previous episodes, I cannot imagine adult scenes getting added to the game as fan service is really not the main theme in this game.

A new Idolโ€ฆ?

After the events in Kirakira Stars Idol Project Nagisa, a new idol, Aine, gets introduced who is still a rookie. Anyway, along with her, there is a senior idol returning to pursue her career once again. Surprisingly, it's Reika, the main heroine of this episode. Thus, Aine and Reika are going to practice together, although Reika is still unsure whether she wants to go back to being an idol. The reasons are unknown, however, she is planning on practicing first and will make her final decision afterward. As Aine and Nobuyuki get closer to Reika, they both want to support her in every possible way so she finds her way back to being an idol.

Do You Have To Play Any Games Of The Kirakira Idols Project Series Beforehand?

Technically, no. As this series mainly revolves around slice-of-life scenes, I would say that it's not mandatory to play this series in the right order. However, I would still highly recommend playing Kirakira Idols Project Stars Ai and Nagisa before starting Reika. After all, the player misses out on a lot of events and there are references available throughout the game that do no make sense when the player isn't familiar with the previous happenings. Anyway, this entry is somewhat special because old characters are rarely appearing, besides the main character Nobuyuki.

The Introduction of Two New Characters

Usually, Kirakira Stars Idol Project only introduces one new idol with each episode. I found it unique that Aine appeared for the first time as well and even assumed she might be Reika right away. However, the confusion gets cleared up early on with Reika's introduction and I found it refreshing. This way, Kirakira Stars Idol Project mostly revolves around the new characters. Sadly, the reader doesn't get a lot of insight into Aine as Reika noticeably the main character in this entry, however, there are still fragments of her personality showing up and after all, she is, without a doubt, essential for this game.

It's honestly hard for me to describe the personality of Aine and Reika, however, I can definitely say that I loved the new friendship that slowly bloomed. Of course, every character that gets introduced in Kirakira Stars Idol Project is utterly cute and both of them are no exception. Sometimes I just wanted to take them home because they're so precious, but I digress.

However, The Previous Characters Are Barely Appearing

As aforementioned, Kirakira Stars Idol Project mainly revolves around Aine and Reika. This means that the appearance of Ai and Nagisa fell rather short, in fact, Ai only briefly shows up whilst Nagisa only gets mentioned. Whilst I understand that this is not their episode, I still found it a shame that they basically vanished from the series and their story didn't get continued.

If I have to compare it with its predecessors, Kirakira Stars Idol Project managed to do a better job at this aspect as Ai was still present but the game still focused on Nagisa and her past. Anyway, as I quickly got attached to Ai and Nagisa, their absence was greatly noticeable to me.

Slice-of-Life Elements with a Serious Touch

Something that is the same as the previous games is that Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika revolves around slice-of-life as well. However, I noticed that this entry is slightly more serious than anticipated and thematizes a topic that I could relate to. Without wanting to spoil too much, Reika lost her reason to be an idol and struggles a lot behind her cheerful facade. I just couldn't leave her alone and throughout the playthrough, all I wanted was her to become confident again. I didn't feel this way during the other games so it was something new for me. Regardless, I loved every girl in this series so far and, along with that, their stories.

Romanceโ€ฆ?

I know, this is the third entry of the Kirakira Stars Idol Project series, and it gets old by now, but this game doesn't contain any romance either. There are advances of Reika here and there, however, they never start to confess to each other, let alone go out. So, in a sense, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika is the same as its predecessors. I didn't find it was necessarily a negative aspect as, in my opinion, romance would be very off in this kind of visual novel. After all, it's only about cute girls doing their thing while their male producer helps them along the way. Anyway, I found that Reika was more aggressive than the other girls, however, that can be explained by her straightforward personality.

Kinetic Novel

Like the previous entries, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika is a kinetic novel and follows a linear story. There are choices available here and there, although they don't change the main story but only a minor part of the dialogue. This means that the player can only obtain one possible ending, which ends, once again, in a cliffhanger. Thus, it's very likely that the Kirakira Stars Idol Project series isn't over yet and might get more episodes in the future. Anyway, I liked that the player still could interact with the game, although the decisions didn't matter at all for the outcome.

Graphics, Voice-Acting, and The Presentation

Those who played any game of the Kirakira Stars Idol Project series can expect the same quality for this episode as well. The sprites seem utterly lively with the animations and I couldn't help but admire them. In addition to that, there are plenty of CGs added, even though this visual novel is rather short, and each of them was beautiful. All in all, I loved the presentation of Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika and, in addition to that, it contains high-quality Japanese voice-acting which greatly improved the immersion.

Unfortunately, I occurred minor issues during my playthrough. One of them would be that the names are sometimes not translated but left in the original language. This point didn't bother me too much as it only happened a couple of times so I could still guess who was talking. Anyway, I also noticed that a few words are cut off from the backlog as the boxes are too small when the characters have a lot to say, although this issue didn't occur too often either.

So, what do we have in the end?

Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika is another lovely entry in the Kirakira Stars Idol Project series. This game is slightly different than its predecessors as it introduces two new characters and, along with that, adds a more serious touch to its story. However, those who played any of the predecessors can expect the same high-quality in this entry as well. That being said, Kirakira Stars Idol Project Reika is a must-play for anyone who is a fan of its series and I enjoyed getting to know Aine and Reika which makes me looking forward to what this series has to offer its players in the future.

Their gacha game has quite a lot of girls, so there's no shortage of goodies to be featured in the future!
