It's an incredible game, but saving really needs properly implementing. I'm glad to hear there's a fix on the way, but it's really something that should've cropped up in play testing. Despite this, definitely worth getting! Past the first level I didn't find the lack of a checkpoint system that big of an issue.

First, I'd like to say - This expansion is definitely not for everyone. I, for one, am loving my experience with Horizons at the moment, and I can't wait until you'll be able to fly with another commander, especially when you're playing in VR.

The reason I think this isn't for everybody, is because one could argue it just adds "nothing" to the original game. By "nothing" I mean no new gameplay elements and nothing more to do other than what you could already do. As of now, all this adds is even more grinding and even more pointless explorations around space, but if you loved that in the base game, then you'll love it even more in this game!

Planetary Landings
Planetary landings are in essence, very similar to the space exploration we have grown to become bored of, or we have grown to love. All this does is allows you to visit a space station/city that is on the ground instead of in space, as well as adding a few little extras such as Point Of Interests (POIs) which are areas that your Surface Recon Vehicle (SRV) can visit. These areas can contain enemy 'drones' that will shoot you, and these drones usually guard resources that you may need for crafting later on.

There are a few little extras on the ground, but other than that, all you will see is an awesome looking landscape that you can drive across.

If you love to explore new areas or just want something different to do, then I highly reccommend buying this DLC. I personally found it so fun to explore the surface of these planets and moons and I loved using the scanner built into the SRVs which can locate a POI. There are also 'outpost' type things that I have not looked into yet, however I would assume you can destroy all the enemies in the area and loot it.

Overall, I would give planetary landings an 7/10 as of now, as there is not a whole load to do, but the experience of just driving on the low gravity surface and finding random shipwrecks and other landmarks seems very enjoyable to me.

The Engineers
The engineer update confused me for a long time at first. Once I realised what I was doing, I began to start doing work and scavenging materials for the engineers and I am currently in the process of crafting an upgrade for my weapons. One thing they could definitely improve is just the whole understanding of how to find, talk to, and interact with engineers.

The actual update gave me a lot more to do, however as of now I think that it is very grindy, as much of the base game is, which to many would not appeal whatsoever. I really enjoy this, however, because it just gives you something else to do in the game - an objective to achieve. It makes a really great introduction to Horizons as it makes you want to land on the planets and look for POIs and then makes you visit settlements in order to give your ships specialist upgrades. It would very easily be seen as boring, but I love doing something different in this game.

Other reviewers have given this DLC a negative review, due to the fact that in this update the NPCs would pull you out of your frame shift constantly, and would then proceed to kill you almost instantly. This is because they too had engineer upgrades, making them significantly tougher to take down and destroy. I personally think that complaining about this is stupid, as many have been annoyed at the fact that many of the NPCs are too easy, leading to this change - and once they are harder, the community is anooyed again but for the opposite reason. Regardless, Frontier have retracted the change somewhat and the NPCs no longer have upgrades, resulting in them being a lot easier. Hopefully that will shut us up for a while!

Overall, I'd give this update a 6/10 because although I had some issues understanding the new update, it made the base game much more fun for me and just game me something extra I could work towards!

Conclusion
In conclusion, have a look at the points I have made, and also have a look at the updates to come which you can find above this review, and then make a decision from there. Much like the base game, if you love grinding and exploring, then is definitely for you. With a pretty cheap price tag of £19.99, it's a must buy for those that are interested in what is released, and what is to come.

Overall rating out of 10 = 6.5/10

Hope this review has been helpful, good luck CMDR!
