This kind of unfortunate thing was happening with disturbing frequency back then, but it's not an uncommon occurrence even today. I've probably had at least a dozen keys revoked over the years. This is likely the result of a giveaway sponsor reneging their agreed remuneration terms with the developer/publisher in exchange for the number of keys provided for a giveaway. the developers' only recourse is to revoke the entire block of Steam keys provided. Unfortunately, this leads to the developer(s) being unfairly blamed for the revocation instead of the scummy giveaway perpetrators. The Steam notification is too brief & inadequate to explain this result. Thus the reputation of the developer AND their game can take a hit that they may never recover from. I'm sorry this happened to you, but at the time, the key I offered on SteamGifts was valid.
