MysterD's Verdict:
Single Player Campaign:
EXTREMELY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Single Player Campaign REVIEW:
DOOM (2016) takes it back to the old-school of the Doom franchise with many of the old-school Doom elements FPS (First Person Shooter) fans from that era love, while also innovating + breathing new life into the franchise. Simply put: DOOM 2016's Single Player Campaign itself alone is worthy of Game Of The Year 2016 Nominations, as not only is it one of the best SP Campaigns this year - but it certainly belongs in the conversations for one of the Best FPS Campaigns Of All Time, putting it right up there with the likes of Bioshock 1, FEAR 1, Quake 2 & Half-Life 2 for me.

Let's face it: people don't play a DOOM game for the story. This game will not win awards for this - it's the usual & typical DOOM story, where Hell has been opened-up and the DOOM Marine is here to stop the Demon Invasion on Mars. Surely, it's a bit more than that with other characters + elements; but, for the most part: that's the story. The game doesn't really in-game go in depth with deep dialogue, plot twists, fantastic writing & things of that sort. Nobody would likely expect that from DOOM; but it's certainly better than it has been in most Id-developed games here.

Often, the DOOM Marine, who awakens in the beginning of the game (which does make this seem like it's a sequel to the last DOOM game) will react to the story + dialogue elements at hand. At times, the characters involved might talk for a short bit - and he might just react like he wants them to shut up; whether breaking monitors, breaking other things, or making other gestures to say "I want to get back to the action" - which is likely, what a DOOM fan is probably thinking! It's simply down-right hilarious, evoking the old days when these games were often played for fun & weren't always 100% serious, TBH.

DOOM (2016) smartly keeps the DOOM player in the action for the most part, as you can find entries of Codex in-game within the game-world. These Codex pieces - which are very reminiscant of Bioshock's audio-logs and especially DOOM 3's PDF in-game pick-ups, BTW - that you can find so they can be read, examined, & looked at by the player at any time by bringing up the game's Inventory (TAB by default). It's up to you if you want to read more of the details about who/what the character, enemies & locations are in the game. And with as much action as DOOM has going on, when it doesn't give you a break - this is a decent way to stay involved in-game and take a break from the incredible action.

DOOM (2016) also gives you just enough few in-game sections where there are story + character elements + moments that player's to experience just to push the character, plot + story ahead a little bit & mostly so you can take a breather from the fantastically frantic, non-stop, fast-paced & constant movement style of combat that any old-school DOOM fan will love.

Oh, and what a joy the combat is in DOOM (2016)! DOOM 2016's weapons and combat feel great here, in which also each weapon does feel unique and meaningful - and often, they'll have to all be utilized min meaningful ways in combat to survive with different enemy types. DOOM 2016 is relentless with its barrage of combat, enemies & violence. The combat's fantastic, at its neck-breaking + constanty Glory Kills are melee kills in which you can take enemies down, often in which they'll chuck out Health + even Ammo to the player. Don't get it twisted, either - just like old-school DOOM, there are weapons, ammo, items, secrets & whatnot are absolutely placed + littered throughout levels.

Speaking of the levels of DOOM (2016), this feels like a throwback + homage to the old-school DOOM levels. Levels are often labrytinth-like here, where the player will have to constantly zip around, fight demons, and find their way throughout the level to find key-cards of different colors (like old-school DOOM!) & take on objectives of finding things, pulling levers, destroying stuff, etc - which feel like the thing Id has been doing since their Quake 1+2 era of shooters.

To add new life to a DOOM campaign, DOOM 2016 has some minor RPG-Lite elements here. You can upgrade your character's Health, Armor, and Weapons for good by taking on Rune Challenges (i.e. Challenge Rooms where you do what the game gives you for a weapon and asks you to do something in a very short amount of time), killing enemies in certain ways with certain weapons, doing certain things within a game's level, finding items in-game for equipment upgrades & anything else you can think of.

DOOM 2016, as you would expect from an Id-developed game, looks phenomenal. With technical details + excellence everywhere, this game flat-out looks amazing. Not only that, in runs fantastic on my rig. With Vulkan API enabled, this game runs on Ultra at 1080p/60FPS most of the time, very rarely even dipping below that. With the cap thrown off, 80-120FPS is not uncommon for my PC (i7 950 Bloomfield; 16 GB DDR3 RAM; GTX 970; W7 64-bit) when running this game. Simply put: DOOM 2016 is a wonderful, technical marvel to look at and see in action.

After 19 hours of mostly non-stop relentless action + incredible shootouts in big-open spaces + arena-like areas within labyrinth-like levels, DOOM 2016 delievers not only one of the most memorable Single Player Campaigns of 2016 & also possible Game Of The Year 2016 Material, but one of the best SP Campaigns of All Time for a FPS. Simply put, fans of DOOM's old-school gameplay are going to love this game; and/or gamers looking for DOOM series to progress by adding more elements to the franchise (like upgrading your gear, weapons, etc) need to look no further than DOOM 2016 for One of The Best FPS Single Player Campaigns of All Time.

Multiplayer Component:
IMPORTANT NOTE: I will look at the DOOM 2016 Multiplayer, at some point in time in whatever its current form is at that time. And when I do, I will edit in my thoughts + review on that in here, as well.

@Pasports31 - Maybe I'm saving some of the length here for when I do decide to review the MP....

Please make a more detailed review, I scrolled to the bottom and saw it wasn't long enough so didn't bother to read. Needs to be dissertation length.

@Waggles - For now, I'm Doom'd out, after the SP. I'm sure I'll get to the Multi and see how it is nowadays, since we're quite a bit here past the Beta.
Wagglesworth Sep 5, 2016 @ 6:25pm
Honestly, I enjoy the multi. it may just be a slower, even more basic version of unreal, but damn if it ain't still fun. A more fleshed out mp suite for the inevitable sequel would be much appreciated.

@Waggles - Doom's SP is fantastic. You're right; probably didn't help for Zenimax/Beth to refuse early reviews copies, given how fantastic the SP turned-out. Maybe they were afraid to give the game out early, since there were lukewarm reactions to the MP when it was in Beta? [shrug] I dunno - but the SP is something special, for sure.

Doom is one of the best shooters I've played in years, and arguably the biggest surprise for me in just as long. It certainly didn't help that Beth refused early review copies prior to release.
