Interesting game.
Would update the UI a little bit, as it requires a lot of clicking. Returning one window back closes all the related windows, moving fleets between systems doesn't support box drawing, on map you can't select multiple ships in case of small micromanagement so you need to move one ship after the other, etc. Despite the painful UI, the game is nice.

Unless you are a casual one-balled gamer named Lopatnik, this game is for you and you should definitely try it!

Update to the review
Last version played: v0.3 ~December
Version reviewed: v0.5 ~May

Engine
Largely improved on the FPS side. I miss more AA options as the edges get chonky at times, but overall huge performance boost is noted.

Pathfinding
Full belt factory wasn't killing my system anymore! Evidently a lot of work went into handling that, and while it is far from perfect, the issues related to the item/maglev pathfinding are not pulling you out of the game like before. Game handles a huge amount of orders in a better manner and is not taking as long as before - no more 10-30 second long unresponsive pauses/freezes, no single digit FPS situations.
Game offers a lot of playstyles and only a select few will be affected by this. Mine was focused on creating a mega interconnected factory. There is still - I can only guess here - the performance issue related to rerouting of a lot of orders/items (can happen quite often if you will carelessly connect unfiltered storage to the whole network). During that time the FPS drops from buttery smooth max to some lower ranges with stutters - but I would rather have the stutter than the mentioned freezes where you start to wonder if you should ALT-F4 out of the game and reload.

Sorting building/junctions
Had some efficiency remarks related to the buildings and belts in general. I didn't play too long with them but it appears that things are moving along "efficiently" and smoothly. Was nice to see the factory actually work in comparison to v0.3.

UI
UI is far from perfect (for example: some common options are hidden in submenus, sometimes blacklist filter resets to whitelist). Be warned that it's tricky - but once you learn it's not that bad. Previously I also had some remarks to the debt/renting UI but apparently it is now gone and replaced with other mechanic.

Diplomacy, questing, crisis events and danger generators
I didn't have a chance to play with it more, but by just looking at the patch notes, I already can see that ALL of my previous remarks have been in some way addressed, reworked, overhauled, improved or outright replaced.

Game is shaping up nicely and gets only better. Crashing issues were addressed. Game has a lot of cool ideas (like it's pull-on-demand item system), mechanics, and it's own unique presentation and charm. Previously I recommended it to the most patient factory-like players, but with all these upgrades and updates, I could safely recommend it to more people.

StarForge Release Version 1.0 - what a lie...

Developers didn't know how to manage the staff and lost a lot of money. They also didn't have any plans for this game and at the last moment they went with the most mainstream theme they could - survival game with crafting. It is rushed and... obviously it is extremly bad. Everything is clunky, not optimized and plain stupid. Honestly, we could make a guide out of this game about how not to make EA games. What a mess...

Well, I lost money but you don't have to. Don't buy this piece of...
