she dwarf my fort

Simulation - The best part!
Dwarf Fortress is completely unique in terms of sheer detail and amount of mechanics, simulating every aspect of the world that the devs can think of. Being the original colony sim, it feels similar to other games in the genre, but the simulation of the world is where the game stands clear above the rest. The world is simulated from year 1 to a year of your choosing, generating history through creatures, settlements and civilizations in a generated world according to parameters the player can adjust as they see fit,

The clearest comparison is Rimworld which simply uses random events dictated by a selected "AI Storyteller". This creates a sense of artifice in the stories created. Why did I just get raided by bandits? Because the storyteller said so. Whereas the raids in Dwarf Fortress are dictated by the circumstances you find yourself in and where the nearest hostiles are. This applies to almost every aspect to the game and is the primary reason why you should play this game instead of other colony sims.

User Experience - The worst part.
UI has always been Dwarf Fortress' biggest issue but the reason changed with the Steam Release. The old UI failed at being readable but the controls were fast (or at least comfortable) once the player got used to them. The new UI is much more readable than the previous versions but has massive usability issues due to most of it being centered entirely around mouse controls. It's my understanding that this is being worked on and will be part of a future overhaul to the UI, but it's an issue right now and it seems like it will be for a long while yet.

I feel that the eventual "widgetification" of the UI being worked on will solve all my issues with the UI and maybe even make the game feel good to play on Steam Deck, which would be really cool.

Mod and Linux support
This game has modding and Steam Workshop support. The experience of installing mods is hampered a bit by the UI due to the mods needing to be selected during world creation, in a menu that doesn't stick out as much as it should given how important it is if you are using mods. It's also hampered by the fact that mods aren't able to be installed through the UI into existing worlds, even if the mod is purely visual.

The game has been ported to Linux some time after the initial Steam release but I still find myself using Proton to play because it works really well and seems to have better mod compatibility.

Conclusion
Dwarf Fortress is still available free (without the graphical tileset) and the older versions are available for free and have been since the start. All that buying this game on Steam gets you is a tileset and convenience. If you have any interest in the game; try it out by downloading it, and the "HEWN" fan made graphics pack from the Dwarf Fortress File Depot (idk if i can post links on reviews without getting flagged), and if you like it, buy the game on Steam. If the UX issues I listed bother you a lot you could try the older versions of the game with a tileset (or without if you are up for it).

This is genuinely one of my favourite games and it is deserving of endless praise despite half my review being complaints. REDEEMED

Absolute trash made simply to push a political message. The Steam store is for games not for your political advertisements.

This review only covers the multiplayer as I haven't been able to come to a proper conclusion on the Campaign just yet. I did definitely enjoy it, though I wish I played on normal instead of heroic as I imagine I would've had more fun.

The actual game is very fun and actually has the best standard multiplayer of any Halo game so far IMO. BUT everything else about the game just kinda sucks at the moment. The battle pass is probably the only reasonably prices microtransactions the game has. All of the bundles in the store are priced by like 3 times the actual worth of what is included in the pack.
The progression in the battle pass is tied to challenges that force you to play certain game modes and use certain weapons. I have been doing the second week of the Fractured Tenrai event and have gotten multiple challenges to get assists in fiesta, so what do I do? I basically forfeit most of my kills to lets my teammates get them which only causes us to lose the game.

I do recommend the multiplayer because it's free and the gameplay is great but you aren't gonna get a good progression system and are going to be stuck with a close to default spartan until you buy battle pass.
