The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle - Episode 1 is a hilarious point and click game, where the player can enjoy bizarre characters, humorous scenes, and adorable cartoonish style.

Pros:

+ The adorable cartoonish art design
+ Great animation
+ A lot of humorous scenes
+ Amazing voice acting
+ Full of memorable bizarre characters
+ Funny and relaxing gameplay
+ An excellent parody on Sherlock Holmes
+ A reasonable length of the game for the episodic game
+ Very accessible puzzles

Cons:

- The story could be a bit more original
- Lack of Hint button, as some of the puzzles can be a bit confusing

The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle is one of this hilarious classic point and click games that you want to play whenever you are tired and exhausted and you only care about the cup of your favorite hot tea, warm blanket and a good relaxing adventure game full of humorous characters. It is planned to be a three-part cartoonish murder mystery series and this is one of these rare cases when you don’t feel like you have been scammed with that episodic thing.

The game itself feels like a typical point and click adventure game full of jokes, witty comments, memorable colorful characters, and an amazing soundtrack. Although it is not very long, I have never felt like the game was incomplete or it was not enough for me in terms of the gameplay. It doesn't have any cliffhangers and it never feels like an incomplete game.

Story

Set in a caricature Victorian London, The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle will tell us a story of a detective Bertram Fiddle and his servant Gavin, that looks like a cyclops. Both of them have to work on a case about the serial murderer, who stole Mr. Finch’s dog by coincidence. During their journey, the protagonists will meet different bizarre characters, searching for clues and solving some pretty easy and casual puzzles.

I really enjoyed the way how the script is written and the whole story is easy to follow. The game is full of funny references and parodies to famous detectives, Victorian London era and it even has hyperbolized version of Sherlock Holmes. Do not worry, it’s not even a spoiler though: Bertram meets Sherlock at the first minutes of the game and they make a bet to finally figure out who is the best detective in London.

Gameplay

The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle uses a classic adventure formula with a point and click system, series of humorous situations and a lot of different puzzles to solve. Bertram Fiddle travels from one area to another alongside with his servant forced to complete some small tasks to get the needed information or items to proceed with the story.

What I really enjoyed about this game is that it has pretty linear gameplay without any backtracking. When you reach a certain location, you are not able to come back and that really helps you, identifying that you have done everything over there, so it’s better to focus on this part of London now. This kind of approach really saves the player’s precious time, when you go to multiple different locations searching with different objects and trying to interact with everything you can see on the screen.

The game is very well done in terms of user interface design, it’s absolutely user-friendly and pretty accessible. You can always notice every single hotspot easily, as they are all clearly visible every time you hover over them with your mouse cursor. Besides, you don’t need to click on the objects multiple times, one click is simply enough. The inventory screen easily pops up from the left side of the screen and items are organized there pretty nicely.

Except for the classic point and click adventure experience, The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle can offer you a few mini-games scenes, which can be a great way to dilute gameplay. They can be a little bit confusing though, simply because there is no indication on the screen that you have to press arrow keys on the keyboard instead of clicking with your mouse.

Puzzles in this game are pretty easy and casual, you don’t have to wander around the multiple locations searching for items and trying to interact them with different objects here and there. It’s always stressful and you can never feel any excitement or pleasure in a point and click game with hardcore puzzles, especially if this game doesn’t have a hint system. But there is simply no need in hint button in this game and this is why I admired this game so much. It can be easily completed in less than two hours and the game is so much saturated that it feels like your journey lasts for at least eight hours.

Graphics

When you look at The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle you can easily say that graphics are probably the most memorable part of this game, it looks pretty interesting and unusual. For me, it was definitely that something that made me feel like “Oh wow! I am interested!”. The design of characters is pretty hilarious especially with their accent on the noses, which looks very weird and out of this world for some reason.

Speaking of backgrounds, they are also perfectly designed, creating a needed atmosphere of Victorian London. There is a great balance between indoor locations with bright and colorful objects all over the place, while outdoor locations of the city where rains never stop have a dark and moody look.

Sound

I can say that the developers also did a great job with the sound in this game, but nothing that you will remember for the rest of your life or anything special here. It’s just a good, professional voice acting where voices perfectly fit their characters mixed with ambient sounds that you can hear all the time from here and there during your playthrough.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, The Adventures of Bertram Fiddle is a very good quality point and click game. It’s only a first episode with a reasonable price and fair length of the gameplay. I am really happy to say, that this game doesn’t use any cheap methods like cliffhangers to make you desperately wait for the next episode. And what is much more important about this game, is that it doesn’t try to invent something new or extraordinary, it just delivers you a great and quality product.

Enjoy!

This is definitely my type of game but I like it when the whole series is available before I play. Nice review. :ChipWink:

It seems like there's only two episodes so far, and I'm not really sure what the end-goal would be for this game series. I'd admit that it seems pretty high for less than two hours of gameplay, but it is at least a quality experience.
