the level design and new mechanics make you say "oh! that's cute" in a good way while the narrative will make you say "oh that's.. cute" in a not very good way. i do appreciate that the narrative wraps this experience together to make the game feel more "full" (a feeling noticeably empty when playing level packs), but listening to the military-grade corniness between test chambers really drains you. especially during the somewhat slow first act, where i found myself wishing this could just be a level pack.

drill through, and test mechanics and chambers do get interesting by the end of that first act. old stuff gets remixed into fresh-feeling chambers and the new stuff makes for pretty compelling new puzzles. unfortunately the new mechanics never get a chance to crescendo into grander versions of themselves or do much mixing with other new mechanics in later puzzles. they kinda just come and go; which is nice in the moment, but leaves you feeling like something is missing when comparing to the truly late great puzzle games of old (portal one and two).

if you are starving and feral and crying for any portal-like content like i was, you'll find this neat. if you aren't, play portal 1/2 so you can return starving and feral and crying.

i'm pretty sure we've hit peak fiction here, everyone.
it's too bad you can only truly play this once.

so full of the charm that made me enjoy earthbound, undertale, and LISA so much, i missed the feeling. the inspiration here is so palpable that im convinced OMORI is a dream realization of a much more fleshed out slash digestable yume nikki. if you have played and enjoyed any of the aforementioned games, i implore you to play this one. if you haven't, i think it's one of the best examples of how interesting and enjoyable this kind of game can be.

OMORI is probably the most enjoyable thing to come out of 2020, and right at the last second too.

poor, poor, Minoria. left to fill the gigantic shoes her predecessor touted. it's almost impossible to talk about Minoria's status without addressing the elephant in the room that is Momodora 4. Minoria takes big leaps to make itself different from her sister; in name, artstyle, and story, but the games are too similar in feel to not compare them.

for those who have played rdein's last games, you'll find a lot the same and a lot different in Minoria. it's almost uneasy, it feels familiar, but takes some getting used to. like walking into your friend's house, and the floorplan is exactly the same as your house, but they laid their furniture out differently. the big ideas are the same: metroidvania where you explore the map to fight enemies/bosses and discover the lore of this world. but, you have a jump from 2D pixelart to 2.5D models/painted art, new movement options, parrying, rpg-esque leveling up system, new story, etc. yeah, you're still at rdein's house, but things are just... different. still, like everyone else has said: if you liked the last Momodora games, you'll like this one, too. Minoria should not be written off as a soulless shell of her predecessor's like some are. this is still rdein's work, and the amount of care and passion put into Minoria can be felt.

worth a play, even if just to give dolans to a dev who cares about their games.
