This game is one of life's greatest ironies - it focuses on a sub-culture that is free living and anti-culture - yet it is one of the most profit driven and soulless games that I've ever played.

Close your eyes and imagine the most corporate HR person from Amazon that you can think of - that person just made this game.

Rarely do you run across a game that is just such a soulless cash grab, there's a way too much of "hey check out this cool thing, it's only 20 dollars of our in-game made up currency to access it and were going to non-stop advertise it during your regular game-play." At this point of development (this review is written Dec of 2024), roughly half of the in-game sports are behind a paywall

The gameplay comes down to what "stat number" your equipment has. Skill has a small bearing in the outcome, mindless grinding for "higher number stat" equipment is king. TL;DR this game rewards spending money/mindless grinding - not skill.

Overall, the vibe is like your lame aunt trying to seem like they're cool and hip with "the youth" while their marriage is failing. The in-game radio sounds like a ChatGPT script trying to appeal to X-game youth.

This game is after one thing - your money. I wish I didn't give it to them

I have over 2,000hrs and have been playing since 2015.

If you have not played War Thunder - to boil it down simply, its a fun game w/unique mechanics ruined by EA like business tactics of paying to play. The "carrot" of the game is to grind for top tier, modern vehicles (AKA the ones they always advertise). I am here to say that top tier is miserable - think power creep and initial unbalancing to encourage you to spend money. To get to that point, you will need to spend at least $10 bucks and a month for ~6 months (outside of no-life-ing the game) and own ~$140 dollars of premium vehicles to able to unlock them, have enough of the in-game currency required to buy them, and PLAY them (due to a mechanic of paying to "repair them"). The rewards for playing well are terrible and the penalty for playing poorly is massive. And it only gets worse, more frustrating, and less fun the higher you go in vehicle rank.

If none of this has swayed you, I encourage you to play to tier 3, maybe 4 and either switch to a new nation or stay there.

For my old dogs out there, these economy changes make for a great point in time for the community to finally make a worth while stand. I heavily encourage you to do your part and not give WT anymore of your money. For some, that might be a big ask but the reward will be well worth it. I will also use my tiny soap box to recommend setting boundaries with this game - before I knew it, I found myself playing this game way too much and getting way too upset w/the shenanigans. I wish I could say it didn't carry over to my IRL life but it did. Please take breaks, set boundaries, and do what is good/healthy for you.

Simple yet incredibly deep game play. These types of games are not normally in my wheel house but this is an instant classic in my book.

In a sentence: a game like none other.

If you pick this game up and only want to do one play through - I couldn't recommend doing the pacifist play through enough, like seriously, it's worth every bit of time and effort.

I am not an RPG type of guy and think this game might be in my top 5 of all time.
