After playing the game for a little bit longer, I will change my review to generally favorable.

So long as you can keep your veterans alive, I can say I enjoy the game. Being able to develop a strategy before "going over the top" so to speak is as thrilling as it frustrating. You are required to thoroughly understand every soldier and tool at your disposal, and carefully move each soldier in as advantageous a route as possible. Having a Scout scan the area, then having your rifleman soften up the area with mortar shells or your signaller calling in air support before *carefully* assaulting a position is extremely rewarding. Doing this with veterans, as I previously mentioned, is fun.

It is when all of your veterans are dead and you are left with privates with bolt-actions who will flee at the first sign of danger or be one shot as they emerge on the opposite of a hedge that the game becomes unplayable. Once you have progressed far enough in the game, you are required to have sufficiently ranked veterans in your squad. I had to reset my profile because I was losing my mind.

Strategy and tactics go completely out the window when your six non-ranked soldiers with no abilities are forced to go up against thirty German soldiers, among them SS Troops, mortars, Pak-40's, 88's, etc. It is borderline unplayable and straight up not fun when you have to repeat the same level multiple times with the same nameless soldiers who have no proficiency whatsoever.

There needs to be some balance. Ribbons, Commander Abilities, etc, help to alleviate some of that unfairness, but you have to actually level up first or progress in order to obtain many of those rewards.

For now, I'll keep playing it, but my enjoyment routinely sways back and forth.

If Borderlands 2, Doom, and Risk of Rain 2 were blended into one game, this would be it.

Arguably the best Turn Based game out there. Definitely challenging, and in some cases unforgiving, especially on higher difficulties. The game is made a thousand times better with mods (Star Wars, Warhammer, Halo), of which there are plenty of, but at it's core it's an incredibly solid game.
The hardest part about it is not going back to your last save after your best soldier was killed (if you're not in Ironman mode) because you care about him too much.

The fun part is after killing someone and then hacking off all their limbs

The game was fun the first time around, but then I decided I'd try a few mods, perhaps a modified SCAR or Katana, maybe a realism mod, something to make the game more interesting...

...a couple mods later and suddenly Johnny Bravo is hurling waffles at me as I'm evading capture from Hunter Hitler, meanwhile dodging Teletubbies and hacking away at them with my lightsaber and listening to the grotesque screams for chocolate by an unfriendly Big Daddy who's pounding away at my ally Deadpool.

And my guns fire lasers.

10/10 would mod again

Tried fixing a prop's position.
Phys gun went haywire.
Unfreeze prop
Killed by the prop (bathtub) as it spiraled off onto the other side of the map.

10/10 would get smacked by tub again
