Reventure is a 2D pixelated representation of an adventurer's worst yet recurring nightmare. Of course observing as the player in the third person means that we get to cackle about all of the strange things that happen, again and again, to the time-looping hero forever stuck in the reincarnations that are doomed from the start.

You can also think of this game in its stages as you play. In the beginning, it's a series of miss-timed button presses that can be viewed as learning the game mechanics. Of course this is the choose-your-death part, where death is heavily featured. A lot of endings happen in misfortune with plenty of humor. The next part is when you really take your adventurer on a quest with a foreseeable positive ending, but most likely it ends up not working out somehow. After puttering around for a while, the game turns into you trying to explore all of the nooks and crannies and really pushing for a good ending, and achieving one every once in a while. For the most part though, there are still things that you don't want to happen, but they happen anyway.

Along the way, you get your appearance drastically altered by the endings and some of it really looks rather jarring. There's a large number of sprites that you will end up playing as, and some of them have accompanying names. You can always change the name of your character in the options menu, but for the most part, I just let it move to whatever the game changes it to. Of course sometimes the same name gets stuck for a long time and I just manually change it to hopefully have a fresh look at things.

The hidden part of the game is the puzzle (albeit simple) element, because of a strict carrying capacity. So while there are a ton of items scattered around the map. So there's a bit of getting used to and thinking through how to maneuver your way to one part of the map with the items you want, but not being overburdened. Each additional item (with a few exceptions) will weigh you down, causing the hero to not be able to jump as high.

I don't know how long it's going to take for me to get to 100%. There are still things that I know I should do but haven't done yet. Of the 100 endings available, I have achieved 71 in about 6.5 hours so far on my own. I feel that if I were to try to do all of it on my own, I would be sure to get stuck somewhere after 80 with little to no idea as to where to go from there. If I keep going at that point, most likely I will be using a guide. I definitely do not recommend anyone using a guide for this game. It's really fun to explore it on your own, face the unexpected endings and to read the quite funny ending descriptions. There are clearly impasses that I can see but have yet to figure out how to get past.

There is a small amount of meta-progression, with a few permanent changes after specific endings that help to give the game a relatively varied feel at these stages. Some of these changes are helpful and can aid your future looped runs, or at least make it more convenient, but others are not too useful, but still nice to see. I will not divulge any specifics.

Please, if you are interested, just go buy the game and try it out. The base price is $7.99 US or 4.99 Euro. It's not expensive and does offer a good amount of enjoyment. Some of the looping does get a little annoying, especially when you come upon an ending that you already have and are desperately trying to do something else, but the run ends anyway.

I do wish that the game allows the player to just continue the run and accumulate possible ending screen stories without needing to reset every time. Sure, if you meet a unfortunate demise, that's one thing, but having a hero's quest end just because a particular ending that does not actually involve death seems rather questionable.

I have a video here from my very first attempt at this game, and I have to say, I laughed a lot. I still think it's rather witty and well-crafted, several hours in, but my attitude in terms of trying to hunt down specific endings has become more goal-directed instead of willy-nilly. Like I said above, only look at the video if you can't decide if you want to play the game. If you think you might be interested, just dive in!

Controls
Controller or keyboard, jumps are predictable and responsive.

Graphics
You see from screenshots and videos, it's NES-style pixelation with its rough edges. There are a few nice color palette options, which you can unlock by finding and doing violence against the game developers in game.

Music
Nice sound track, really good and fitting for this game. It does get repetitive after a while, because it's always the same track that cycles when you move into a specific area or an event happens.

Audience
Well, I can say that it's definitely not for everyone. The game has that heavy pixelation, which will drive away some people. If you are looking for a challenging platformer, this is really not it, there is minimal combat, and most of the time it can be avoided. It's kind of a puzzle-platformer type of game with a lot of witty commentary. The allusions to other games are blindingly obvious, and that's fine. If that sounds like a game for you, then check it out.

Pricing
Base price is $7.99 USD or 4.99 Euro or Pound. Not a heavy price to pay, and you will know after 20-30 minutes whether you are the type to keep going to try to finish it or to stop there and maybe consider a refund. But I think the price is totally reasonable. I just question the regional price gap a little bit.

Conclusion
Reventure is a lot of fun, and probably good to be played without having read any spoilers or watched any videos. If you think it might be for you, just jump in and experience it for yourself. I am having a lot of fun, and I think that for the majority of you who still buy it after looking at the screenshots and the trailer, that you will probably have a blast too.

The game's definitely very interesting, I don't think I have ever played anything quite like it. :D The time-loop is like Minit, but I am happy to not have to keep doing stuff in a strictly timed fashion. But likewise the world is very small, doesn't take long to walk from one end to the other, but to get all of the secrets, that's the meat of the game and the exciting part of it. :golden:
