I will be giving Frogun Encore a positive rating because I did enjoy my time with the game, however it does not compare to the enjoyment I got out of the first Frogun game. The latter half of my review will be comparing the two games, so if you didn’t play the first Frogun game those complaints may fall on deaf ears, however the first half of the review will be judging Frogun Encore on its own.

Frogun Encore is a platformer which offers a variety of movement that is only made possible by using the Frogun which is akin to a grapple hook, you're able to launch yourself into enemies, walls, and platforms alike, while also using it as your main weapon. You’re able to chain together multiple shots, you can jump out of your shot early which launches Renata forwards (which lets you fire again), bonking on a wall with a Frogun shot lets you double jump out of it for a bit of extra verticality, but sacrifices the ability to fire again until you land, unless of course you’re holding an enemy or a pot, then instead Renata will double jump off of that instead, allowing you to fire the Frogun again. Each level in the game has time trials, and speeding through the levels with these movement techniques in mind makes for some extremely tight but enjoyable platforming. On top of just being able to move quickly, each level is packed with a ton of collectables, each level has a full emblem to signify that you fully completed a level, I would often not move onto the next level until I cleared everything in each level, replaying the same level an additional two or three times wasn’t boring because I would always find ways to move quicker, and moving was just too fun.

However I will not pretend that I do not have gripes with the game, for starters the bosses. I think all of the bosses in the game are a bit too weak, as they barely posed any challenge, another issue that arises with the bosses actually has to do with the time trials. The bosses in this game have a few attacks they can use, and then they will use an attack which lets you hit them back, which is fine on paper and standard for most games, however this does not bode well when you have to beat the bosses quickly for the time trial, on more than one occasion I didn’t beat the master time trial rank because the boss would simply not give me those opportunities to retaliate. On top of that they were extremely buggy, sometimes they would use attacks that clipped outside the arena, or attacks that seemed like they were meant to be standing in a certain spot, but they just never moved so the attack was either useless or I had to take completely unavoidable damage. On the topic of some bugs, sometimes platforms that are supposed to break/crumble when you land on them just don’t? (which I guess makes the platforming easier so I shouldn’t complain but it’s odd that the consistency for them was a coin toss). I found that sometimes when resetting a level, it would reset you at a checkpoint instead, which brought your time back to 0:00, which would be incredibly easy to cheat for the time trials so I avoided using it whenever it happened.

This next bug actually made me question if what I had just played was even real or not, there was a level I was playing where the time trial just felt IMPOSSIBLE, no matter how quickly I ran through it, and beat the boss at the end, I just couldn’t complete the master time trial, in fact I couldn’t even get the normal time trial completed, I put the game down for the day and went back tomorrow to try again, and I first tried the level with no issues. What changed? Well the boss that I was fighting at the end of the level was just not there anymore, instead of warping to a boss arena the level just ended, which gave me the master time trial quite easily. When I went to the next level the boss was there instead, after resetting the game again it was on the same level still, I am still unsure of how that bug even happened, but the game teleporting me to the boss on the wrong level was definitely one of the most interesting bugs I have encountered while playing.

This next complaint might just be a me issue, but due to the camera being a fixed point on Renata, and usually being at an angle thats a bit less than a birds eye view, I had a very hard time judging if a platform that I was jumping to was higher, lower, or on the same level as Renata, which makes up the majority of my deaths throughout the game which was a bit depressing as this issue wasn’t present in the first game. However the addition of the circle drop shadow made it so that you can tell if a platform you wanted to land on was directly underneath you, which certainly made traversing easier as without it I would be lost.

I still think Frogun Encore is a great game for someone who wants a cute platformer

From this point I'm going to be comparing the two games, so if you haven’t played the first one this next section shouldn’t mean much.

The most major changes from the original game to the sequel in my opinion is the movement. The paragraph highlighting what I liked about the game earlier wasn’t a lie, however I still prefer the simplicity of the first game's movement. My biggest issue with the sequel's new movement was the double jump. For most of the early game the double jump was way more than enough to clear any gap, or to make any jump, making use of the Frogun sort of obsolete, I used it to either save myself or to skip sections for shortcut times. Whereas if you compare that to the first game, using the Frogun was incredibly important, every single level from the first game felt like it was built and designed with the Frogun in mind, finding different ways to use it to traverse showed immense love from the developers in letting the player experiment. However for Frogun Encore actually using the Frogun felt like your 2nd option when you can just double jump, most of the earlier time trials I was able to complete without using the Frogun at all, this didn’t apply to the 2nd half of levels however, which is nice, but for the first half of levels it felt more like I was playing Crash Bandicoot than Frogun.

My next issue is with the camera, compared to the first game, you were able to freely move the camera to look around at future parts of the level, readjust it for jumps, or look for hidden collectables within the level, which I think worked perfectly. I actually loved just looking around in the first game, it made the environment of Frogun really pop, the game was very charming in that aspect. However in the second game, now you have a fixed camera which you can’t adjust, and honestly it was such a letdown. But this also was a major hindrance to me as I wasn’t able to look at something head on and determine if the platform was higher, lower, or on the same level as Renata, which if this sounds familiar it is because this is the issue I highlighted earlier. This issue wasn’t in the first game as I was always able to tell where a platform was or wasn’t simply because I had full control over the camera. There were many moments throughout Frogun Encore where I would go for a jump and miss entirely because I thought it was on the same level as me, when I actually had to double jump for it.

However the one major positive Frogun Encore has over its predecessor is the coin grind, which was non-existent in this game.

I would still recommend Frogun Encore to someone, but the first game just felt superior in many ways.

Frogun is a cute platformer that revolves around the use of the “Frogun”, which lets you grapple to walls and enemies alike. Every level in Frogun is relatively short, but they are packed with many optional objectives such as coins to collect, gems to find, time trial, etc. which will make you spend more time in the levels. So while the levels are short, going for the optional collectables is worth your time and makes up the majority of the game. For most levels I only needed to play them twice, once for the main collectables and then once more for the time trial, and this formula worked well. My favorite part of the game was definitely the time trial portions. Experimenting with the Frogun to figure out how to cut as much time as possible throughout each level was a treat, there was nothing more satisfying than finding a way to clear a level in 14 seconds because you found a way to grapple around.

I peeked at some other reviews and a few of them were either about the camera or the controls being bad, and I disagree with them. Using an Xbox One controller, you press B to shoot, and A to jump, and if necessary you can hold down RT to aim the Frogun which locks you in place. As for the camera I think it also works fine, it’s a rotating 3rd person camera that is a set distance away from the player so you're able to spin it around as much as you need to to help you adjust for any jump or Frogun shot, on top of this you’re able to see so much of the level with the camera and using it to look for secrets within the level is incentivized (which I personally love). Both of these feel fine and natural to use so I'm confused why so many people found difficulties with them. (Also the game has an indicator for where you’re about to land much like Crash Bandicoot 4 has, and it makes jumps that much easier, just for this addition alone the game is fantastic.)

I won't pretend like the game is perfect however, the bosses of the game are a bit lackluster, they have very few attacks in a set pattern that are simple to dodge, and the use of the Frogun in them is mostly just using it to attack, I think bosses where you had to rely on platforming would’ve been a nice addition. On top of this the end of the game features a boss rush level, which wasn’t the most fun thing to do. Another major complaint (which will only apply to those who decide to go for every achievement on Steam) there are two achievements which rely on you purchasing every hat and gallery art from the in game shop, but the amount of coins in every level assuming you perfected every level, does not come close to the mountain of coins you need to make every purchase, they should have been made cheaper.

Other than those two complaints, the rest of the game was incredibly enjoyable, an easy recommendation if you enjoy platforming collectathons.

When I wasn't getting stuck in an auto hiding closet, or running away from the literal darkness because the scariest thing in this game is the fact that I can't see the game (we love useless flashlights in video games they're so awesome). My group and I ran around for 15 minutes trying to solve a "puzzle" only to realize that the panel to open a door had disappeared and it was impossible for us to progress, we only figured this out after watching a fullplay guide on the game and seeing that we just had a bug. Also the lack of a HUD was very annoying, it just felt like a nothing game. The most fun I had was making fun of how not great the game was.

When I first got Pizza Tower I had originally refunded it as I thought it wasn't my type of game, and then giving it a 2nd try something had clicked and I could not put the game down. The levels flow really well and allow you to run through them quickly while getting bonus objectives and as many points as possible, is like putting a puzzle together. The game will thoroughly test your skill as the levels get progressively harder and the gimmicks get wackier, but correctly running through a level and getting the maximum possible rank for said level is maybe one of the most satisfying things you could do in a video game.

Provides endless amounts of hours of content for casual and serious players. With so many item combination possibilities and random generation it is difficult to get bored very easily of this game, would also recommend grabbing the DLC along with the game to provide even more than what the original game has to offer.
