All and all, a very very good game for its price. Chances are, if you like Factorio (especially if you like its built-in "wave defense" scenario) or otherwise enjoy the idea of defending a factory from waves of enemies, tower defense style, you'll like this.
That said, I do have at least one personal issue (hence this may or may not apply to others. I suppose it depends on how many other players are physically handicapped): the control and keybind system is not very flexible, and for me at least, a few of the controls are completely unusable. You see, I have a spinal cord injury and control most games using a combination of my trackball mouse and Windows' built-in "on-screen keyboard"; I can barely use a physical keyboard, to the extent that the one I have usually sits unused under my monitor. Thus, certain control combinations are unfortunately too complicated for my limited control set up. For instance, while most users will probably have no trouble rotating existing objects or selecting regions (both of which require holding a key while moving the mouse cursor around and then releasing...), in my case, these aren't usable because the mouse cursor is busy clicking the on-screen keyboard. If, instead of holding a key, selection were a simple matter of tapping a key to switch into selection mode (clicking usually fires the weapon, but for some reason right-click is also a selection -for deconstruction- tool...), or if objects would rotate one quarter turn each time a key were tapped while the cursor was over them (I can position the on-screen keyboard accordingly), it would be much better for people in my situation.
worth noting, because this game is Open-Source, this also means I might be able to fix my own problem and have the solution added to the official build by submitting a pull request. Because of this, my overall rating of the game is not affected, because I'm not solely dependent on the developer to get around the issue (that said, I don't think you ACTUALLY want me trying to fix this myself; although I know a bit of Java, the bit I know is "how to make a mess of a source file and break everything" part). I still give the game a solid 9.5 out of 10, quite possibly the best I've ever given a game that I didn't pay at least $10 for.
Tl;dr great game for a quarter the price I would've expected to pay. It's like Factorio meets tower defense

I played Don't Start Together first, so I might be a bit biased to the general feel of the game, but if so, it's only because the whole survival experience feels extremely well-balanced. It's not too hard, not too easy, and as long as you follow the helpful wiki's information, you'll probably do fine... maybe!

Successfully downloaded and all the stuff seems to have arrived in my Gift Chests intact. Thanks for the free stuff (especially the starter pet), DECA!
Kabam would've never given stuff out for free just for playing the steam version... Now if I could just get them to let me import & use my browser account on here somehow, all would be well with the Realm...
Marked as having received for free because, at least when I downloaded and as of this writing, it was/is a free DLC

Basically 2D Minecraft, but with more of a focus on bosses than exploring. It's fun. Try it!
(for more context and detailed information, check out one of the many MANY let's plays, or the game's wiki terraria.gamepedia.com)
old review. Does not do the game justice in hindsight. Rewriting!

the comparisons to Minecraft are well-founded, but frankly a bit misleading. If you like Minecraft, you will probably like this, as it's roughly the same genre and concept, most notably the fact they are both sandbox voxel/pixel builders, and of course, the early game progression.
Pros:
  • perfect mix of familiarity and novelty in its genre, especially for anyone that has played Minecraft, Starbound, or probably a few other games I just can't think of offhand
  • Active and helpful discord
  • Active developers. They've been putting out updates semi-regularly since the early days, and unlike the developers behind Starbound, they actually remembered their own anniversary (Chucklefish didn't even acknowledge Starbound's 5th)...
  • thousands of items
  • like 20 different boss fights, with different attacks depending on the difficulty level of the world you
  • speaking of which, 3 World difficulty levels that affect not just how hard things hit, but EVERY aspect of the difficulty
  • character difficulty controlled separately from world (there are also 3 levels of that, one of which is hardcore/permdeath)
  • absolutely EPIC soundtrack
  • May contain trace amounts of evil
Cons:
  • Early game can feel a bit tedious, particularly if you've done it a few times. However, this can be mitigated by the fact you can share items between worlds
  • Fluid mechanics are so buggy that they eventually just declared it all a feature. It's not necessarily BAD, but it certainly takes some getting used to. One time, I even had water that flowed infinitely from one point without pumps. It was interesting, to say the least
  • Invasions and events that occur in response to your progress, such as Goblin Invasions, seem to know the most inconvenient possible time to happen (okay this one is actually just me joking because I can't think of any other cons at the moment)

"RotMG is an ego checker" —BB_smooth[remaster.realmofthemadgod.com]
This game might be the most I've had with a dungeon dungeon crawler, and now that the game is under more competent ownership (DECA Games bought the rights to this circa June 2016), the game just keeps getting better. By contrast, the most notable thing Kabam (the previous owners) ever did was add "real money only" packs so utterly overpriced that they prompt community jokes like this[www.realmeye.com]
pros:
  • This game is a rogue-like, including the Permadeath aspect. You have to play smart, or you die, and you will not get resurrected under any circumstance (well, unless you somehow hack one of those old amulets[www.realmeye.com] in, but that's not the kind of resurrection you want!).
  • Although it's a freemium game, it's not really that "pay to win" IMO. the only progression you can DIRECTLY pay for, as far as I'm aware, is growing your pets, and everything else requires at least some amount of skill to do without dying. Most of the game's income is from cosmetics, which I always felt is the best way for games to go. They're easy to add (as long as you've got a good artist on staff), don't affect the gameplay beyond customization, and people love buying them most of the time.
  • Even a lot of the stuff you can buy with money can be obtained with "fame" (derived from your XP after your a character dies) or traded for. The main exception on trading is "Special Themed" (ST) Sets, but again that's at least partly because they provide a new "look" if you collect all of them.
Cons:
  • support is kind of hit or miss. A lot of the times, unless you have a particular important question that requires special attention, you'll get template responses. They've explained that, as you might expect, this is to "make sure they can get everyone", but i can't help but feel they are trying to cut costs on support technicians.
  • If you started playing on the browser, there may not be a way to migrate or merge your account with steam so that you can use all the steam integration stuff like using your wallet to pay and earning steam achievements. This, incidentally, is why I have 2 accounts, not just one... I started working on a steam account

Original review: The ONLY flaw with this game is the fact there's no way to buy an individual copy to ensure each friend only has one copy from me, not an extra free copy ;-)
(I have 2 friends to which I want to give the game. Don't really trust either of them to give the extra copy back)
in all other regards (minus the lack of adventure mode, the Teleportatato, and DLC), this game is just as good as Don't Starve, but better because you can play with friends!

edit 2022: positive review rescinded. I just learned that in January of last year, the company that develops the game was bought out by China's technology arm Tencent. Although "As part of this agreement, Klei retains full autonomy of creative and operations across all aspects of the studio, including projects, talent, and more.", that's just not good enough for me.

I wish I could get a refund, but since I can't, well, I have plenty of other games I can play. And yes, I realize boycotting doesn't mean much if I'm the only user doing it, so do me a favor would you?

A charming little Japanese (translated of course) Anime-esque game. I'm very happy I happened across this when it was recommended by... well, it's been so long I can't remember who recommended it, actually. Regardless, if the idea of managing a store inventory and crawling through dungeons occasionally for stuff sounds appealing, essentially being the proprietor of an item shop rather than the customer, give this game a try. You won't regret it!
graphics (9/10):
charming graphics; only reason it's not a 10 is one specific angle of Tear that looks a bit creepy (but in fact it's the back of her hair)
gameplay (8.5/10):
simplistic at first when you are just starting out and trying to scrape by, but once you get your bearings it quickly becomes more intricate. buying stock, selling items, buying from customers, helping customers find what they need, etc. etc., and that's just the start!
controls (7/10):
the controls were a bit of a disappointment. For one thing, it only seems to accept *some* NUM pad keys (but not the numpad arrow keys, which is what I really wanted), doesn't accept "enter" for the confirmation key like I was hoping, etc.. Secondly, there is absolutely no support for mouse-based controls. You can't even click on menu options, which makes me wonder if this game was developed by a company that mostly makes console/handheld games. In short, it's far from ideal, but the controls still function well enough, hence why it's 7/10 not 5/10 or less
Story (9/10):
don't worry, no spoilers. I haven't finished it yet anyway so I wouldn't be able to spoil it if I wanted to (and of course, that also means take this rating with a grain of salt). What I can say so far is that the characters are all written in a delightfully humorous manner. Even the main antagonist is shown to be a bit ditzy, meanwhile her fairy guardian appears to be about as tolerant of it as Tear is of Recette nonsense, although she's a bit more passive. All in all, funny and imaginative are two words that would describe it well.

I've never played advanced wars, but if it's a similar as everyone else is saying it is, holy Hannah I need to get it! If turn-based pixelated wars led by slightly-magical commanders sounds remotely appealing to you, GET THIS! 10/10

edit 2020-03-10: I do have one bit of nitpicky feedback for Chucklefish: could we please get more screen resolution options? On one hand, 1920 x 1080 is too large, because it covers my taskbar and puts the title bar out of sight, defeating the point of using windowed mode. On the other hand, the next aspect ratio down from that, 1280 x 720, seems to jump over the ideal point to and opposite extreme, only covering a little over half my screen in either dimension (effectively a quarter of it), which is too small for the Overview screen's map display to be of much use (I can't see any of the unit healths).
This nitpick has no bearing on my overall review; I was just told that Steam might be the best place for suggestions

The comparison that it's terraria in space holds pretty well, but I think it's unique enough to stand on its own.

It's less boss oriented and more sandbox. Instead of just one world you have virtually infinite planets that you can link together and teleport between, with your ship serving as an intermediate space which you can also expand and build on (although not to the same extent as the planets). If you find yourself visiting a planet frequently enough and you have the resources (and trust me, it's not cheap), you can even place a teleporter so you don't have to beam to your ship, although beware that you won't be able to remove it thereafter without destroying it.

That's not to say there are not bosses and interesting combat mechanics; there are. It's just not what you may be used to. For instance, weapons are either one-handed or two-handed, depending on whether they have a built-in secondary ability, so one-handed weapons tend to be more flexible, whereas two-handed weapons are generally more powerful. The ranged weapons use energy in much the same way as terraria's magic weapons use mana, but unlike terraria, pretty much all armor offers boosts to your energy capacity.

Bosses are also different, but not so much in combat as in how you encounter them. Unlike terraria, you don't just summon a boss by using an item, but rather you must complete a sort of dungeon that resets if everyone in it dies, much like a party wipe in an instanced encounters in games like WoW. There will usually be a checkpoint before the boss though, so you can keep trying as long as you have resources to keep trying. (It's also easy enough to spawn in items if you get desperate, although obviously that's considered cheating. I may or may not have done this to get through my first encounters with bosses 2, 3 and 4, but in my defense I have a spinal cord injury so the fact I'm able to play at all is a testament to modern technology...)

All in all, whether you see this as a new twist on the general concept of terraria or a game of its own is irrelevant. It is a VERY good game and I've barely played anything else since I bought it. 9.8/10

This game's positive reputation is very well deserved. Anyone that likes RPGs will love this one. Fight or spare. The choice is yours.
