If you played the first one and like being able to customize your "tech" then you'll like this one for it being even more customized.

However, some big differences:

This one seems more focused on bases than big roaming farm techs like the first one. Granted, I haven't gotten very far in it yet. But, it's definitely far more challenging than the first one was.

I haven't encountered any "missions" yet beyond the objectives log that's basically your tutorial of what to build and when.

The older game's lobbed munitions seem to be replaced with hitscan (so far) lasers and munitions. Which is a good thing IMO.

Building is fun so far. It's a little limited since you can't move AND place building components (at least not that I've figured out yet).

The flora so far has been pretty dangerous (even generating lightning storms that can one-shot you). Which is a big switch from the last game where the only real threat was the other techs.

I'm not sure if i"m a fan of all the struts, armor and basically puzzle piece building you do for your techs instead of just using blocks, but it's an interesting twist on building and makes you think it through based on what you have.

So far it's been pretty fun.

Played on Index headset with vive wands.

This game is so bad I thought I was going to be autistic when it was over.

Starts you out with two guns... that you have to keep dropping to get through the tutorial because you have no holster. What VR game lets you go guns akimbo and REQUIRES you to have a free hand to do most things without having a holster?

So you spend half the time dropping your pistol and then trying to pick it up which means you're grabbing ammo mags and instead of putting them away you're dropping them on the ground which means they're lost because you can't pick them back up...

The whole magnet glove thing is about overplayed since Alyx... nobody seems to have a new concept.

The gunplay? Couldn't tell you. In the 15 minutes I played I didn't see a single person... not one. Nobody to shoot. Boring as any "shooter" VR game I've ever played... ever.

Plus, no configuration options to change the movement to blink, alter the movement control from "head direction" to wand direction (which is a horrible default)

Played with an Index Headset and Vive wands on survival mode.

Great game.

The proponent is really slipping toward insanity from being alone and you can feel that in this and how it must really feel to be completely and totally cut off from humanity.

The gunplay is tight just like the first one. There are some points where.. you will die. Just remember, having an explosive out and ready to throw in areas that LOOK like there could be an ambush is almost always a good idea.

Ammo... find it. it's everywhere and you're going to use a LOT of it.

Protips:
Your dog has room to hold two pistols and several grenades/tennis balls so make sure you take advantage of that.

Your gloves have an "inner" lining to hold one object each.

Keys are sometimes best held onto for other areas unless they are required for progression

You can REACH some things that appear to need buddy's help

Your arms are like stretch armstrong, use that to your advantage when opening doors.

Shoot locks from a distance... like... a big one.

Freds with growths on their head almost always take less ammo if you aim at unprotected areas even though it's not a headshot.

Big riot gear zombies only take one bullet AFTER you sic buddy on them and their visor opens

Save yourself time and effort and set climbing to "comfort" settings. Then all you have to do is click on things that require climbing puzzles and you'll be on the other side. Great for people with Vertigo.

3/4 through the game you lose all your weapons and ammo so don't hoard for that "final battle". Spend those rounds if you need to.

Cons:

There are parts where you follow the somewhat linear path and end up in a dead end. Don't waste too much time wondering what happened because, most likely you either just need to walk up to a door in the room to get a loading screen or backtrack.

There are several locations where you can't do something simple like step over a small parking lot gate which is aggravating, but you'll find you can lift/move things in those situations that you couldn't otherwise and wouldn't be looking for.

You can only carry one "two handed" weapon on your back.

Sometimes loading an area can put things out of sync (ALA claws and paws area) with the radio and the operating table, but it does seem to eventually catch up after some dialogue.

The "final" battle reminds me of any given level in serious sam. If you understand that reference you know what you're going to be up against.

I can't say I understand the glowing reviews here.

Granted I'm not that far into the game, but so far this is a mid FPS at best. I'm going to give it some more time, but I just got through the very long intro and so far it strikes me as a low budget, less graphic and more poorly animated generic FPS than most games I've played recently.

Yeahhh... I played some more and not only are the animations atrocious, the voice acting is way off the mark, but the graphics are sub-par, the game is basically all side-quests that take 2 minutes to do and are boring.

Not my cup of tea.

Great with mods.... and only with mods.

Doing "new game plus" is a total waste of time.

The game has a lot going for it, but the lack of QOL features is what ruins it for most people.

Specifically recommend:
Accurate Aiming
Avontech series
Baka Series
Better visible magazines
Clean Reflex Sight Lenses
Cleanfield
Easy Digipick
Enemy Friendly Fire
Engine Power Mod
Faster Airlock and Hatch Animations
Faster Ship Animations
Fog Remover 2.0
Gravdrive Weight Mod
Instant Scan
Less Spongy Enemies
Lower Ship Registration Fee
More Ownable Ships
No XP Kill Steal Fix
Richer Merchants
Show Star Names
StarUI Inventory
Venworks Open World Encounters and Caves Overhaul (*MUST HAVE for non-boring planets)
Weapon Power Mod

Yeah, changing this to a "no" for me. Why do developers have to put gay stuff in every frigging game lately? ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ disgusting.

Reviewed using the Index headset and VIVE pro (2.0) wands.

Love the references to Halflife and other references in the game. The action is nice. Pistols are varied, most weapons are upgradeable with very rare printers for modification parts. Ammo is "automatically produced" so you don't have to find and pick up ammo throughout the game.

The cons:
The later levels start getting punishing for no reason at all and harder to navigate rather than the streamlined and linear approach the game takes in the beginning.

Some weapons require "both hands" to be attached in order to aim which is a ridiculous concept in VR that I really wish no game had ever started doing. If I needed both hands to aim, I would do it in real life, not in the game where now I can't actually steady my aim because I can't touch my hands together and I'm not putting my plastic "gun" sleeve on just for the times I use a shotgun or need to snipe.

Trying to grab the machine gun in the ATOL is almost impossible while it's moving

There seems to be no way to speed up ammo production and the better the weapon, the more you want to use it, the slower the regeneration is for the ammo so the more you CANNOT use it.

Boats and other methods of automated transit are seriously flawed, like to bounce around when they hit loading areas, etc.

Turning locomotion off (which is specifically using blink) is required in some areas, but it is also fundamentally flawed since more than once I found myself being "reset" into a wall or on top of nothing in the sky. Don't try swimming without locomotion, that's even worse.

The aiming angle of the shotgun is far different than the rest of the guns and really "off" in terms of the angle.

I only made it about halfway (ish) through the game before I started seeing cut and paste areas like with the centaur camps.

Overall: I loved the game at first, but the longer you play it the more you're kinda ready for it to be over. It's a great game that over plays its uniqueness and makes you end up getting frustrated with some of its quirks like the voice acting that sounds like a couple kids from drama class in high school and the cutscenes that you can't understand at all.

I'm clicking recommend, but if there was a neutral button I'd pick that.

Basically just different color portals with a slight variation around the edges and the bottom (where it touches the ground).

Not sure why they are relegated to specific classes though. I'd love to have the electric one for my druid and the fire one for my sorcerer.

Basically a really cheap mount with the platinum you buy. I would have liked for this mount to have an electric trail and a armor that really screams ELECTRICITY for my lightning storm druid, but it is what it is.

Great looking mount. Definitely checks all the boxes:

Colorful
Shiny
Sparkly
Emissives
sparkling cloth
Half purple
Half Green
Half white (three halves?!)

Actually.. yeah, it's kind of a hot mess.

But, it's basically free since you're paying for the platinum.

As with all PocketPair games... it's a cute game, cute premise... looks polished and pretty on the surface, but when you start playing for any length of time, the cracks start to show... and they are DEEP.

I.E. Getting raided by stuff twice your level and getting your base LEVELED. I mean... nothing left. Why would the mobs be twice your level? You can't fight that off... so why would that be a mechanic? Why? Because, PocketPair doesn't test their updates as it is evident in their last game "Craftopia" where they broke the game entirely and left it broken to this day.

So... maybe wait to see if this game actually gets some mechanics updates or some mods come out to resolve the glaring issues like storage problems, lack of commands for admins, skill progression, broken raids, etc.

UPDATE:

My Eikthyr deer has fallen through the world with me on its back. It, of course died. Since there's no map fast-travel I had to swim to a rock and climb out (lucky I was able to do that or I'd have lost all my stuff)

I had a nice group of pals all picking up and dropping the same berries... over and over. While starving... picking up food to take to the feeder, but not taking it because they were hungry. Great coding.

Also, couldn't place a wardrobe or book case. In a 1-wall high base. If you try, it gets built on your roof... and if you don't realize that's where it went all your pals just stand around doing nothing because they can't get to it. The only way you can build it in your normal base is by standing on the stairs.... How did this even make it through alpha testing?

The pals just throw stuff in boxes without any regard for already-existing stacks which fills up your storage very fast. I spent more time moving things back to other boxes than I did anything else while at my base.

YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE: You can't join a community server with a password from the "history" tab. It just times out. These guys suck.

UPDATE:

They produced a patch that covered all the issues I mentioned here. Giving it another try and I'll update my review.
