It's... ok?

I mean, it's not the Saint's Row you want it to be. In fact, after playing for several hours there is nothing whatsoever that even says Saints row.

Takedowns have a cooldown
The "gang" is basically 4 crunchy kitkat soys. At least.. so far. The entire game lacks testosterone so far.

I just hope it gets better as I go... because, so far it's pretty boring.

I'm still rating it up for the sandbox approach, the various missions and the fun of blowing NPCs up never gets old.

EDIT:

The further you play, the less it seems like a cheap knockoff of the original Saints and more of its own thing.

It definitely is humorous in parts (the whole larping thing was hilarious) and the one-liners were entertaining.

It 100% could have been just fine without them making Kevin a LGB DEI hire on the team.

Towards the ending the game goes completely off the rails with a near-death sequence that is... ridiculously unrelated and immersion breaking. I couldn't stop shaking my head.

You get the best guns/tanks/helis toward the end in the spirit of most games in this genre. Which, of course makes them pointless unless you're an achievement chaser or 100% completionist.

The "hideout" which is a church (again... using the original saints script) isn't something you can upgrade or that undergoes changes along the way. Once you wipe out the other gangs it just suddenly becomes "fixed" which is also a WTF moment.

The game itself is fun, there is plenty to do. The ability to adjust the challenge to your own liking in the gameplay settings is a nice touch.

The leveling system felt like it was just thrown in... the perks you earn feel useless and unoriginal just like the "skills" you learn at each of the whole 20 levels you'll max out before you get 1/4 of the way through the storyline.... yet still get EXP for each mission.

All in all it's a thumbs-up. I enjoyed the characters when I stopped waiting for them to be gangsters and settled on them being kitkat crunchies from Gen-Z that were surprisingly (and thankfully) anime-free.

Looks awesome, plus the in-game currency is a big plus.

Love that it has an aura-trail, is high resolution and the sounds the horse makes is altered to sound like ice crackling. They did a good job on this mount.

Diablo 4, Season 2 has redeemed the game, IMHO.

It addressed everything I didn't like about Season 1 and even some things I wouldn't have thought about that make Season 2 just better to level, better for loot, better for QoL stuff...

I know I'm being vague, but there is too much to list.

If you're a fan of the Diablo series, the game will not disappoint. Now... I mean. Season 1... was problematic.

Oh, and microtransactions... are ONLY COSMETIC.

This is NOT a pay to win game by any stretch of the imagination. So the reviews whining about it are speaking from ignorance.

The game so far:

Pretty good!

I don't get the negative reviews.

It's basically Dark Souls with a twist in the Umbral Realm. I'm really enjoying it.

You can "peer" into the Umbral Realm whenever you want to. Granted there are areas where you are told to peer by moths, but you can also traverse it if you want more of a challenge since the creatures there get stronger and stronger the longer you're in it.

Basic Dark-Souls weapons and armor... increasingly challenging class selection (from easy at the top with the dark crusader to really hard at the bottom with the convicted criminal)

Decent loot system and "souls" retrieval that works as you would expect after you die.

EDIT: Reading most of the negative reviews and it has to do with their hardware, not the game. It plays and runs fine.

Eh...

It's ok. I Mean, it's quirky and interesting for the first 20 or so minutes, but after that it gets annoyingly repetitive. Things like Sheet Metal and Wood planks are only carryable one at a time and can only be stored in crafted holders (so you have to waste limited resources to have a place to put these specifically)

It's a total slog trying to build a way to get to another rooftop, the weeds are relentlessly annoying and basically a timer since you're going to eventually run out of resources trying to get rid of them. So you're in a rush to get to a high enough tier to kill the plants that are spawning them.

There is no penalty for not sleeping that I've seen. It's only really needed if you want to fast forward time.

All in all it's fun for what it is, but if you're at all OCD I wouldn't play this. It's going to drive you nuts.

I'm not sure I understand the glowingly positive reviews.

I loved the first BG "go for the eyes, boo" and the characters in it. So far the characters seem bland and pointless beyond a storyline interjection.

As far as the game itself... the beginning is ridiculously disjointed. You get told basically want to do (as we are used to) for the first 30 minutes or so, but then nothing. No information, no direction... I found myself lost in a cavern with lots of traps in the first 10 minutes after starting... and I was looking for a stupid town to get "cured" in. But, as I said.. no direction, no hints as to where you need to go. Just a locked door and you're supposed to go "around" to another way in. But, it ends up being pointless for the storyline. I really hope this gets better at some point so I can see what all the positive reviews are about.

So far this game is a pretty package, nice golden, sparkly bow on top... but, inside... nothing. But, hey... I've found a bunch of crap to make emotes and change the way my character looks in case I ever play online with other people... Because, you know, that's important....

Oh and... all the gay in the camp... is beyond disgusting. Sad that we live in a world where developers want to spread sex fetishes in a kid's game.

Of course, it won "Best game" categories... because "GAY"mer culture is... well, it's full of that type of people with the cat-ear onesies that dress up for comic con and such.

Also, if you're interested in NOT dealing with the forced LGB nonsense, you can get an addon called "no alphabet" from several different modding websites besides Nexus that obviously has an agenda.

You're welcome.

Great game... until you go to space.

Which seems like an odd thing considering the entire purpose of the game and the name itself involves space.

Can you go to space? Yes.
Do you need to go to space? Not after your first trip in your very small mining vessel to get some materials you need for your machines on-planet. Once you've done that you never... ever... need to go back to space. I mean, when you land back on the planet after you've gathered some material from asteroids... you won the game. That's it. You're done. There is literally nothing more to do. Nothing you were working toward has a point now. You can continue to beef up your machines, but to what end? For what purpose? There is no point in building "bigger" or "better" at that point.

Almost the entire game is played on the surface of the planet you start on and you work diligently toward getting off-planet. But, by the time you build your first tiny ship to go farm some materials that can only be found on asteroids, you realize that was it. That was the ONLY time you'll have to go to space and those materials are for your machines on the planet. There is exactly ZERO reason to return to space... ever.

In that aspect, the game fails entirely. The premise is bad, there is no "end game", there is no point in building a big ship beyond just "building a big ship". It has no function, no real use beyond "building a big ship".

If this was called "planetary engineers" it would be a different story... and IMHO that's what it should be called. The on-planet stuff is amazing fun, especially with mods that add random attacks on your base, other factions to wage war with or befriend, etc.

They keep adding DLCs so you can build new stuff on ships, but they haven't addressed the simple, core problem with this game:

No reason to go to space in the first place.

I sadly feel that because of that, this game is an utter failure.

The building is fun, the on-planet stuff is fun (with mods), repairing... not so much fun, but you can fix that with mods.

I really, really want to recommend this game, but.. they've had years to fix the core problem with the game which is there is NOTHING TO DO IN SPACE.

Eh... it's ok.

Kind of bland, very slow with small periods of enemy spawns, seemingly random "dungeons" that require a loading screen and nothing all that interesting to find or do. I mean, you can only explore so far in any direction because there's some kind of cloud that makes you vomit... you can get a "supression" for that, but the game doesn't tell you that you lose it when you use a checkpoint. The whole game is ok I guess.

If there was a "neutral" I'd pick that.

Admittedly I didn't get very far in the game and just focused on upgrading my equipment... which made very little difference and I wouldn't even bother with mods. They are really bland and boring too.

The dodging is kind of poop (not that you need it for anything other than boss fights) and the boss fights you basically have to dodge like 3x to get out of the way of 1 attack... which are almost always charge attacks it seems.

There is no real direction or guidance on what you need to do. "Go get some keys"... mmkay. Where? Then what? No quest log in this game either...

Died to a floating ball that had some kind of gravity field and chased me through an entire level no matter how far ahead I got from it... literally left the instance and came back. It was still there. Used a checkpoint, monsters reset, but the ball didn't. These types of "quirks" are what makes this game annoying.

Cons (since that's what you're reading this for anyway)

Grindy for the sake of being grindy
No explanation of most of the mechanics
No item list, gear list, information, stats list, wiki, etc. Beyond a button that says "see versions" that shows where the item will be when you rank it up or give it more rarity. Which, of course does nothing to compare it to other items or tell you if it's a good item to have or better than other items in some categories. Which brings me to my next issue:
The "armory" is a dead link that apparently hasn't been added yet..... on a game that's not even in EA, so you have NO IDEA if the item you just picked up is any good, how it rates vs. other items, if you might want to keep it, if you just found the best item in the game, etc.
Movement is a chore... you're actually PUNISHED for having a higher hull value.... on a spaceship.... in a vacuum... in space... That's simply not how physics works. I get that larger ships might get a penalty for movement.. if they are MUCH LARGER, but increasing your hull to ANY degree shouldn't include any kind of a movement penalty when movement is already far too slow.
Shields are pointless, they melt instantly and stay down until you leave combat for a set amount of time... which doesn't happen very often in higher levels.
Weird mechanics like a HIT CHANCE are listed for your ships... but, "chance" indicates a percentage. This is NOT a percentage, it's a flat value. How is it calculated? How much impact does it have? NO IDEA. There's no information and no way to find out.
You can disassemble items you find for a very (infinitesimal) small percentage of progress to learning to make the item (talking 0.01%), so after 1000 items being disassembled (you're a slow learner apparently) you can finally learn to make that item! But, oh, wait.. not for good. ONE TIME. That's it. Once. One chance to make the item after disassembling 1000 of the exact same versions of that item, lol.
Lots of the items have a version number along with the durability, rarity and quality numbers. What do they mean? Who knows? The difference between versioned items isn't explained anywhere...
The game is punishing just to be punishing when it comes to death and item repair. When you die you lose durability of your items, you can repair the item using tech points (the in-game currency which is purchasable with real money), but the QUALITY drops. You can't repair the quality unless you have a super-rare repair kit.
The game FORCES you to PVP in later SR areas since the only areas that are in some SR-tiers are specifically PVP. So, the only way to progress is to join a CORPORATION which you are constantly spammed with invites for the second you hit the map. I opted not to do this since I have obligations outside the game that require me to have an irregular play schedule where I might have to log out very quickly. But, apparently that's the only way to progress...
Are you going to try to solo SR-3 and above? Be prepared for the next annoying aspect of the game: cloaked bosses. You can't just progress around the map, fighting and uncovering the map unless you want to meet cloaked bosses that bring a ton of other enemies with them and pop out of nowhere. Why is this a thing? It's almost like the owner just wants to make the game punishing for no reason.

Basically this is a half-baked game with poorly explained mechanics, punishing combat and ridiculous PVP where an entire fleet is created with 100+ ships in order to dominate OTHER fleets. There is very little in the way of single-player content and, speaking of content... once you've completed the first starter area (SOL) you've seen all the game has to offer.

EDIT: I made it to level 23 in this game solo with 4 fully decked out battleships (talking mostly legendary items) and still died in SR-4 due to the annoying mechanics thrown in like being harpooned and having your ships dragged off to different sectors, being "hacked" which resets your already-insanely slow lock-on and weapon cool-downs (that the NPCs don't have as they happily pelt you with fire as soon as you enter a sector), etc.

I was very generous in my support of this game since I probably gave the developer $1,000 the first month I played in RMTs for Tech points. I hope he uses it to work in this game in positive ways.

EDIT: 29 July 2023 in response to Developer post:

Not accurate?!?! Outdated?!?!?

:taloslol:

Bruh.. I reviewed this 2 weeks ago, lol. Stop.

You say the same thing on other people's negative reviews. Instead of deflecting, try making some changes that don't involve PVP and/or catering to the whales. I mean, having to do SR-5 and up in stacks seems like a really poor way to play the game, not to mention having to PVP in some areas because there are no other options beyond "love day" where you let people go into PVP areas without being attacked. I mean, if you had the idea that people didn't want to PVP to the point that you implmented that, maybe it's time to start looking at a PVE version of those areas?

I know you're a one-guy team, but if you're going to charge what you're charging for upgrades and RMTs you really need to take a look at the end-result and whether it's worth it... because, on paper it seems like it, but when you look at how ineffective 4 fully upgraded battleships are in SR-4? It's not at all worth it.

The other things I've said are accurate and 100% current. Use that info to change the game in good ways, don't deflect from it. Own it.
