FromSoft's PC ports are so ♥♥♥♥, but it doesn't matter, because what's inside is absolute gold. Although it took me 12 hours to really get into the combat system, once I was there, I couldn't stop.

Surprisingly charming if you give it a chance. And one of the most engaging combat systems I've seen, period.

I'm probably only half way through this game but there are already a lot of patterns emerging. While I thought that all the weapons just didn't fit the penitent one visually as well as mea culpa, they certainly made the gameplay experience much more interesting. It's also nice to see that your weapon choice impacts the initial traversal of the map.

Now, other than that it's mostly more of the same compared to blasphemous 1, save for the cutscenes. I see that a lot of work went into them, and it's not even that they're bad. To me, they just do not fit the rest of the game in terms of artstyle and feel. I felt very taken aback every time one of them played. Pixel art just doesn't gel so well with anything else.

But to me the biggest star of the show are the bossfights. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. They could feel a little unfair and stiff in blasphemous 1 at times but here, this is the biggest area of improvement. Each one of them is a masterpiece so far. They are dynamic, well-telegraphed, challenging and most of all fun. Some of the best in any Metroidvania. Kudos to the team! A++

It's sad to see reviews of this game so skewed because people don't like the subscription model and ubisoft connect. I don't like them either but the game is pretty lit.

However good this game may be (and it actually IS very, very good), the experience of playing it is lackluster and restrictive. The list of issues I've had with it is a bit too long for my liking. Here's the major ones in descending order of severity.

– MOTION SICKNESS –
I suffer from strong motion sickness but usually PC games are good at giving you options to deal with it. Not FROM SOFTWARE games though. There is no adjustable field of view and the framerate is locked. But the worst offender is that the camera is constantly adjusting itself. There is no toggle for this and this disconnect of how you move the mouse and how the screen moves is disorienting and nauseating.

EDIT DEC 2022: Locked FPS and FOV can be adjusted by mods by now. Auto-Adjustment of the camera is togglable in the menu.

– AUDIO ISSUES –
The first time I started the game the audio was fine. Second time there was no audio at all. Every time after that the audio got distorted and was crackling so heavily it was indistinguishable noise. This distortion would persist even after closing the game and my PC would be unusable until a restart. I've tracked this issue down to my audio Interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 2nd Gen) that didn't wanna play nice with the game. Somehow every other game I've played in the last 4 years has not had any issues though. Curious. Every time I want to play I have to switch to my built in Sound-Controller (and back after) which is extremely annoying.

EDIT DEC 2022: Still not fixed

– PERFORMANCE ISSUES –
With a RTX 2080 and a 2700X this game shouldnt perform too bad, or so I thought. Remember Cyberpunk 2077? That game everyone hated on because of bad performance? Cyberpunk ran better on my PC than Elden Ring does. While most of the time my framerate is the full locked 60fps I am having way too many microstutters and fps drops upon moving through the world to make the experience enjoyable and immersive.

EDIT DEC 2022: These are less severe in later stages of the game, however still quite troublesome.

– PC USER INTERFACE –
This might be more personal preference but I hate FROM SOFTWAREs UI. It's clunky, its not well optimized for mouse and keyboard and it doesn't convey information efficiently. If it does work that is. For whatever reason my mouse is offset a few 100 pixels up from the actual pointer. Not a dealbreaker, just annoying.

EDIT DEC 2022: Mouse Issues fixed but UI is still garbage tier.

I've been looking forward to this game for quite some time and the hype kind of made me forget that FROM SOFTWARE are simultaneously developing next-gen gaming experiences with previous-gen UI and accessibility features and PC Ports from the dark ages.

Yes, the performance is meh. Yes, the balancing is total and utter ass. But no, even playing in the weeks after release, Cyberpunk 2077 was less buggy for me than any Bethesda or Bioware game has ever been on launch.

It tells ambitious storylines, and while ultimately a little short - it definitely delivers a narrative experience and an immersive world that isnt as stale as what seems to be the norm in the RPG market these days.

Early Access Review
Supergiant Games have done it! I've always been a fan of their art, music, storytelling and pacing but for the first time i feel like the gameplay is on par with everything else. Transistor and Pyre came close but not as close as this. My only worry is that there will not be enough of it and i hope they continue development for a long time.
