Early Access Review
well, this one has been a long time coming

Peripeteia is my absolute favourite videogame, there is no doubt about that part.
The soundtrack, the level design, the gameplay loop, I loved everything about the game back when the first steam demo dropped in 2021.
and most of the positives are still in here, the OST only got better with the expansion to more artists, the ideas that the levels revolve around are still interesting and diverse, and the writing of any given conversation is god tier.
If you ask yourself “should I buy peripeteia” there is a simple answer:
YES

But sadly I have to voice some warnings/complaints, just as stated I still think peri is worth buying even taking all of these things into consideration.

First up is that the art style changed to something more PS2 inspired instead of staying with the PSX aesthetic, whilst it had some positives, it has completely ripped me out of the immersion of playing abandonware, everything looks to polished and you feel like you are playing a modern game instead of an old early 2000’s overambitious game that you found on some Korean image board.
This is something that bugged me for a long time, as it kills a unique layer to interpret the style and world of peripeteia, you’re not playing inside of a cyberpunk dystopia that takes influences from the late 90’s, but instead you felt like you where playing a non existent retro game that was MADE in the 90’s.

Second of is that the level design in priorities shifted, 2021 had a focus on letting the player break the game, skipping areas, breaking sequence etc.
But most of all it was set on replay ability, joining the communists in the chasm was not just a different person you had to shoot, but a completely separate storyline.
Modern peri’s alternative routes are effectively skip buttons.
Tutorial has 4 ways of ending the mission.

Kill the android take the bulb.
Return the Android.
Snitch on Filemon.

These 3 options end the level INSTANTLY

The 4th option see’s you, talking with the android, going to the church, having a shootout, then climbing up a radio tower whilst having a giant firefight and then returning to the priest so he can stop the machines so that you may acquire the bulb.
There is no choice in what quest I want to make, it is one quest and three skip buttons, this would be excusable if it was only in the tutorial, but it isn’t!

Belgrade has the same problem with you being able to finish the level in less then three minutes.
This requires no skill and is honestly just lazy design.
Same thing happens in Karabash’s first area, where you can either follow a giant quest line threw the sewers, fighting of an entire water treatment plant, or shoot one guy.

Again, this is lazy quest design and honestly let’s me question the intelligence of certain fans that praise these things.
Why would you pay 25$ just so you can skip most of the content, why even bother with the quests at that point.
And look, I’m not saying that you should be forced into a quest, what I want is player choice, it was shown in the chasm that multiple storylines was something the devs where prepared for, now 3 years later, I’m seeing none of it.

Another large problem in the new levels is how it forces me into combat by denying me to hide in the shadows.
2021 gave me multiple opportunities to shoot out lights, the new levels hide the lights in places up on the ceiling.
This is a problem especially in the tutorial which should be teaching the player that lights can be shot out by you aswell as the enemies, but all of the shootable lights are up on the ceiling, even worse, the rays that come from it are not vanishing once the lights are shot out, indicating that they didn’t even think about this when placing the lights.
Levels like Belgrade and Karabash are way worse though, especially Karabash has no lights that you can shoot out and you are effectively at the whims of the enemies and need to become a super solider shooting up every area of the game to survive.
this is a giant problem as the core tenants of peri where by the lead dev “snake” described like this: “you are not a super solider, you are a hobo, and the only difference between you and your enemies is, is that you can climb better, are a bit smarter and carry more ♥♥♥♥”.
Nowadays it feels like this idea was completely abandoned.

I could go more into detail considering more minute things, but honestly, it’s not worth it.
Peri is a good game, especially memorial tower and the chasm (which demo versions can be found on https://archive.org/details/embraced-2.7z ), but it’s become more and more difficult to defend the choices of the last 4 years considering that September 2022 was peri’s originally planned release date.
So, should you buy this game?
honestly YES, even with all things taken into consideration it is extremely good and just all around fun, the mechanics at place are unique and something I have never seen before, the art style and sheer size are unique, but even so I hope that the aforementioned issues will be fixed in the coming 5 levels and that peri can drop sometime in 2027, fingers crossed!

Even though I haven't experienced any bugs or glitches on my first play-through (which was on day one), I still have a few problems, these would be the story and the open world, the open world isn't really that big, vertical exploration is a lie, you can't really go up and you also can't really go down, unless you use glitches or something along those lines. The story is very short and only sort of gets going at the half way mark, and if you have seen any of the trailers, you actually know everything you need to know. The characters are mostly boring and where a real dishonor to the original concepts, like yorinobu, who just really has no influence or presence in the wider plot of the story.

PS: no I didn't like Jacky
